With Eyes Wide Open

The Crown of Life

2 Timothy 4:8
New Living Translation (NLT)

8 And now the prize awaits me—the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on the day of his return. And the prize is not just for me but for all who eagerly look forward to his appearing.

The Crown of Life

Simple truths are hard to handle,
They tell more than i wish to know,
i prefer a sugar coating,
i feel the sting but the venom’s slow,

i walk along with eyes closed tightly,
Seeing only what i wish,
Truth is not my cup of tea,
Nor crow my favorite dish,

A trio blind leads me onward,
In truth it’s me, myself, and I,
If it weren’t so doggone funny
i might sit right down and cry,

Dear Lord above, two truths you tell,
They’re all I need to know,
First i am a hopeless sinner,
But still you love me so,

With that i’m free of all my cares,
I can lay these fetters down,
You see me as i really am
And still grant to me to wear a crown.

You are Truth in its purest form. You are the very essence of love. Have mercy upon us all…sinners in need of grace.

To Seek and Save

Speaker of Truth

Luke 19:7-10
New Living Translation (NLT)

7 But the people were displeased. “He has gone to be the guest of a notorious sinner,” they grumbled.

8 Meanwhile, Zacchaeus stood before the Lord and said, “I will give half my wealth to the poor, Lord, and if I have cheated people on their taxes, I will give them back four times as much!”

9 Jesus responded, “Salvation has come to this home today, for this man has shown himself to be a true son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and save those who are lost.”

Speaker of Truth

He held no degrees of learning,
Not a credential or even an award,
He simply spoke the truth in parables
While completely healing the broken horde,

They clung to him as he traveled,
Sat at his feet on the mountainside,
Watched as he fed the thousands
And called forth Lazarus from the other side,

He rode into town on a donkey,
While the powerful plotted his end,
Then he sat ‘round the table to save us,
Only to be betrayed by a very close friend,

He endured a trial of such mockery,
Silent as a lamb he would be slain,
On a tree he endured our just punishment
Until only his righteousness remained,

Truth was the sword that he wielded
And love was the message he gave,
He waits now for the final commandment
To gather all the lost that he sought and saved.

Great is Your love for us that You would reach down and save us. We thank You and praise You. Amen!

Shout it!

The Gospel

John 3:16-21
New Living Translation (NLT)

16 “For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. 17 God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.

18 “There is no judgment against anyone who believes in him. But anyone who does not believe in him has already been judged for not believing in God’s one and only Son. 19 And the judgment is based on this fact: God’s light came into the world, but people loved the darkness more than the light, for their actions were evil. 20 All who do evil hate the light and refuse to go near it for fear their sins will be exposed. 21 But those who do what is right come to the light so others can see that they are doing what God wants.”

The Gospel

Shout from the hilltops
This message so grand,
God isn’t mad or angry,
He offers you his hand,

He offers it in love,
No price must you pay,
His son was the offering
And faith the only way,

So give up your rebellion,
Surrender to his will,
Repent of your trespass,
Paid for on that hill,

Then he’ll come in the Spirit
And daily walk by your side,
He’ll heal and renew you
And from you never hide,

Good News is the message,
Speak of it with great joy,
His love’s the only weapon
By which chaos is destroyed.

We thank You for Your love that saves us from ourselves. We confess our sins and repent of them before You. Forgive us and guide us from this day and forevermore. Amen!

Seeking Peace

Just Because

Romans 12:18
New International Version (NIV)

18 If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.

Just Because

If life were such a simple thing
We’d never have a spat,
But we must walk on eggshells
Or a war we’ll soon begat,

I’ll do this and you’ll react,
Then it all gets out of hand,
How these things get started
I’ll never know or understand,

It seems we’ve always had our fights,
Somehow we never got along,
I’ve felt the sting of your sharp words
Never knowing just what was wrong,

Why did it start so long ago?
Why does it still go on?
I guess we’ll blame it on someone else
And keep trying to get along?

Perhaps it would be better
If we simply would depart,
But for the strangest reasons
We’re bound together at the heart,

If life were such a simple thing
We’d know what was the cause,
But this crazy dance will never end
And the reason seems, “just because”.

Today, give me strength enough to live in peace with everyone I meet. In Jesus’ mighty name.

Without a Doubt

Matthew 21:21-22
New Living Translation (NLT)

21 Then Jesus told them, “I tell you the truth, if you have faith and don’t doubt, you can do things like this and much more. You can even say to this mountain, ‘May you be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and it will happen. 22 You can pray for anything, and if you have faith, you will receive it.”

If I do believe
Then it’s more than what I say
I must have no doubt

Please build our faith. Make it a wall of protection around us, a refuge of comfort within us, and a tower of strength that we may use to proclaim Your love. Thank You for healing us all.

We Are Running from the Start

Philippians 3:13-14
New Living Translation (NLT)

13 No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.

The Athletic Ones

Graced by God and genes
With strength and power and will
Their muscles and sinews seem never to fail
As they become “king of the hill”

Mere mortals who try to confront them
Are left behind and eating their dust
And their trophies and ribbons abound
For in winning alone they do trust

But there is a race that they’re running
It started the day they were born
With an opponent who is slow and patient
And stands at the finish with scorn

Time is his name and death is his game
And only one race has he ever lost
On one dreary day with all hell to pay
A shepherd atoned for every cost

So call on His name while there’s still race to run
He’s waiting with arms open wide
He’ll lift you up high in the heavenly sky
And carry you to the winner’s circle He provides

Help us to attain Your goal for our lives. There is a race to run, a race to win, and a prize worth every pain. May we never stop striving to run the good race. Help us today and everyday to lose ourselves and gain You and all things. Thank You!

Ask a Favor

This week  I’ll be taking some time off, so I’m posting some old prayers from my Mail Chimp Days. Hope you won’t mind?

Isaiah 66:2
New International Version (NIV)

2 Has not my hand made all these things,
and so they came into being?”
declares the Lord.
“These are the ones I look on with favor:
those who are humble and contrite in spirit,
and who tremble at my word.

We dream about being rich or being a movie star or a world class athlete. To possess a talent or beauty or skill that sets us apart from the everyday and makes us special. But what if you had a genie in a bottle and one wish only… What special thing would you ask for to set yourself apart from all the rest?

I would hope that I would not waste my one chance at reaching the top. That I would go for a serious wish…God’s Favor. Yes, it’s better by far than talent. There’s not enough money in all of creation to match it. It might be the single most precious thing you could ask for. To have not only God’s blessing, but to have Him actively pursuing your prospering in everything You do. Wow!

Please look down on us and pour out on us, Your Favor. Empower us with what we need to succeed. Turn the hearts of those that can assist us to do so. Make us pleasing to all that come in contact with us. May Your Presence go before us and follow us in all that we endeavor to do. But most of all Lord, may we be pleasing to You for the sake of our relationship and to bring Glory to Your name.

Thank You, Jesus so very, very much.

The Hand of Forgiveness

This week  I’ll be taking some time off, so I’m posting some old prayers from my Mail Chimp Days. Hope you won’t mind?

Luke 6:37

“Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.

Forgiveness. Who would think at first glance, how powerful it is? To restore a universe gone mad, you would expect to need legions of angel armies, or massive solar storms unleashed on rebellious creatures, or maybe even some simple “wave of the hand” that wipes out the source of the problem in some way beyond our understanding… But “No”, a simple, seemingly weak act, offered in unselfish love, blots out the offense and gives us a fresh start. Then we might think it so simple or pure that it’s only for the Divine, some “God” thing. No again, it’s an expectation of us all. So much so, that our salvation is based largely on how well we “wipe clean” the slates of others who ask it of us. Amazingly simple solution, amazingly just, simply amazing!

Please move in my heart and give me the faith and love and trust to set aside my selfish “wants”. My desire to be right, to be justified, to be in charge, and let me have the heart of a simple, gentle shepherd. Who traveled far from His home, Who searched out His stubborn sheep, Who fought for their lives with a simple weapon…Love. Who would believe such a thing? Forgiveness is the Key to Freedom for the Forgiver and the Forgiven. Help me be both, Lord.

What Ifs

What If

This week  I’ll be taking some time off, so I’m posting some old prayers from my Mail Chimp Days. Hope you won’t mind?

Psalm 139:14

I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.

Are you ever filled with “what ifs”…I am. What if I had done this? What if I had gone here? What if I had been a pilot, or a preacher, or a doctor? What if, what if…? “What ifs” seem harmless enough but they are spawned in fear and dwell in darkness. They are sirens of the sea calling you to destruction on the rocks. They are evil personified, disguised in seductive wrappings. Full of lust and absolutely no love,
they take the very best we are and cast it in the sewer. We are God’s creation, redeemed by Holy Blood, living in a Holy Temple, and holding a ticket for an eternal destination. Do not ponder “what ifs”. We are what we are and if we are His, then we are indeed wonderfully and marvelously made. Spend your time instead in praise and thanksgiving of what you are.

If I had a million years and could speak continually, I could only scratch the surface of thanking You enough for all You’ve done in my life. You placed me in a loving home. You granted me great parents and family. You situated me in a country with freedom and prosperity. And when I’ve sinned and fallen so short of what You had planned, You’ve pursued me, picked me up, and helped me back on my feet. All the time providing the only way to be made new. I am what I am Lord, and it is because of You. I thank You! I ask You to continue to make me more like Jesus.

Truth Is Where You Find It

John 14:5-7
New Living Translation (NLT)

5 “No, we don’t know, Lord,” Thomas said. “We have no idea where you are going, so how can we know the way?”
6 Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.
7 If you had really known me, you would know who my Father is. From now on, you do know him and have seen him!”

Leaf Well Enough Alone

If I were Jewish
And read from right to left
Then leaf would become fael
And oh my, I’d be bereft

My simple fall time signal
Would become a horrible ghoul
Instead of something ending summer
It would be a man, mean and cruel

Now that’s a change I’d hate to see
Since there’s already so much pain
Perhaps I’d better start from scratch
And read it once again

Maybe if I read it
From the outside looking in
Then leaf becomes a flea
And I’m at it once again

Well, what if it were read as lafe
We could all use a joke or two
But no it’s only one who’s never late
For an appointment where he’s due

Well fiddlesticks and poppycock
With this word game I am through
There just one way to speak the truth
And the truth is what you’re due

Leave a leaf as it’s suppose to be
No new meaning is needed at all
Accept the truth for what it is
And let leaves fall where they’ll fall
