Rejoice in the Darkness

Mark 15:33
New International Version (NIV)

The Death of Jesus

33 At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.

Eclipsed by Love

It seems that many might think
That the Earth will soon be in a lurch
And perhaps fall from its celestial perch
When the eclipse makes the sun to shrink

The moon will come spinning around
Placing itself between us and the sun
And provide us with some spectacular fun
The effect being dark and profound

Its shadow will course over much of the planet
As it does what it has always done
Holding us in place with the help of the sun
God’s mighty team of life, we oft take for granted

So do not look up in fear today
At the sun, the moon, and the stars
Marvel instead at the Hands with the scars
That died to show us the Way

And watch and ponder the thrill
That awaits us in the heavens above
The Gift of an amazing love
Purchased so long ago on a far away hill

Your hand moves and the planets fall from the skies. You speak and kingdoms are no more. Yet we marvel most of all that You would call us friends. Be with us today and everyday. You are our Light in the darkest situations. What shall we fear?

Gone with the Grainy

Isaiah 42:15-17
New International Version (NIV)

15 I will lay waste the mountains and hills
and dry up all their vegetation;
I will turn rivers into islands
and dry up the pools.
16 I will lead the blind by ways they have not known,
along unfamiliar paths I will guide them;
I will turn the darkness into light before them
and make the rough places smooth.
These are the things I will do;
I will not forsake them.
17 But those who trust in idols,
who say to images, ‘You are our gods,’
will be turned back in utter shame.

Soon Made Smooth

The Earth lies grainy and rough
It strains at its deepest core
And its struggling sinews flex and rise
Its birth pains soon will be no more

God from His heavenly throne
Has ordained evil to meet its demise
The mountains will crumble and fall
The valleys will awake and arise

A covenant as old as all time
The Bridegroom will come for His bride
Mercy has paid the Bride Price
And His people will live by His side

The curse is finally over
All heaven and Earth give a yell
The devil and all of his minions
Are swallowed up into their hell

All creation can once again rest
And order is restored throughout
“Holy, holy, holy is the Lamb of God!”
Let every tongue sing and shout.

We are so small and know so little that it’s easy to feel that we are hopeless. That the politicians, financiers, the movers and shakers have us by the scruff of the neck and we are at their mercy, but we are not. You have always had a plan for us that is good and full of promise, that has justice at its heart, and that cannot be stopped. You are simply waiting until everything is just right. Thank You for loving us so. Please move within the lives of those who do not yet know You and answer their prayers. Bless them with healing and resources and wisdom so they will know for sure that You are just waiting for them to say “yes” to You. You are our One true hope. Thank You so.

Where does it hurt?

Matthew 11:28-30
New International Version (NIV)

28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

• Protesters at the White House

• Taylor Swift groping trial

• Kim Jong Un has nukes miniaturized

• Girl killed in Paris pizzeria

Are you feeling “prickly” yet? Having that annoying little pain in your neck? Most of us do and with good reason…the world is going mad.

2 Timothy 3:1-5
New International Version (NIV)

3 But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.

Be with us in these days. Call to us and keep us on the path of righteousness. It would seem that the whole world is turned upside down but You are still in control. Touch each person that reads this prayer. If they need healing then perform a miracle in their lives. If they need resources then bless them with jobs or send someone to help them. If they feel alone help us to reach out to them as though they were You. Bless us all with Your presence so we will not lose hope or direction.

We thank You for everything, for through everything You change us and make us anew.

Glaringly Unprepared

Revelation 1:13-15
New International Version (NIV)

13 and among the lampstands was someone like a son of man, dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet and with a golden sash around his chest. 14 The hair on his head was white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire. 15 His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of rushing waters.

I took a walk today
Strolled down the street
And up the narrow way

I saw what I could see
Watched clouds drift by
And flowers in the breeze

I heard the brook roll by
Stood on the bridge
And saw a bird fly high

Then on the ground I fell
Blinding light shone
And angel voice did peal

“He is King! He is King!”
From every mouth
And each tongue, “Let it ring!”

Looking up, at Him there
His hair was white
And eyes a fiery glare

My heart with fear near died
As thunder rang
And stars fell from the sky

But then He spoke with Love
“Come up, my friend
And be with me above”

I gladly took His Hand
Both God and man
That brought me home again

How often I walk through Your glorious creation without giving a thought, without being grateful, or without being prepared to meet You. What would happen if You actually sent an angel with a vision of Jesus as He is in heaven. Would I be ready? Would You call me Friend? Please help me today, to be what You would have me be.

Thank You for each and every blessing. May I never waste them. Amen!

Spicy Spirit

Acts 2:16-18
New International Version (NIV)

16 No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:
17 “‘In the last days, God says,
I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
your young men will see visions,
your old men will dream dreams.
18 Even on my servants, both men and women,
I will pour out my Spirit in those days,
and they will prophesy.

Looking for Some Soul Food

When things are spicy
They make our taste buds sing,
They make all our food
Have lots of zip and zing,

When things are aromatic
We smell deep and long,
Whether the odor
Is weak or very strong,

Our taste and our smell
Are so intertwined,
Our noses and taste buds
Are sort of “one of a kind”,

But what of our spirits?
Just what sets them afire?
Are there tasty visions?
Or fragrant dreams that inspire?

Can we turn up the heat?
And come out of our daze?
Just what is the “soul” food?
That will make our hearts blaze?

Only one food source
For a hunger man’s soul
Open up God’s holy word
Read and grow bold

You bless us with Your word and You will bless us with Your Spirit. Come to us in these days in dreams and visions. Open up doors that cannot be shut. Grant us Your presence to guide and direct our every step. Thank You for each and every blessing. Amen!

Amble With Grace

Genesis 3:8
New International Version (NIV)

8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden.

In the Cool of the Day

The breeze was cool
And we could hear His footsteps near
In days before we heard them
And they brought to us no fear

He would come to us each day
And we’d amble down to the field
But today we choose to feed upon
The one and only forbidden meal

It seemed so good and looked so fair
While the serpent hissed with tempting guile
So we made our beds in sins’ desire
“Surely Not,” he said with a deadly smile

Then the sound of footsteps came
And we hide without a word
“Where are you?” came His gentle call
We answered but were barely heard

“We are naked, Sir, so we are covered
Clothes of leaves to hide our shame
Who has told you, you are naked!”
We both stood there and passed the blame

“Woe to you evil serpent!
On Your belly you shall crawl!
And woe to you rebellious mankind
You shall suffer an arduous fall!”

“Woman! You shall be ruled by man
And hard childbirth will be a part of life
And man who shunned his duty and his oath
Will work and sweat for naught but strife!”

And now I cast you out and bar the gate
Serpent, down below you must go
Until I send a Son for you
And He will smite you with a deadly blow

From one sin man would meet his end
Through One man salvation came
First man had all the sin
The Second took all the shame

One way and only one we have sinned
With evil we have schemed
One way and only one we are saved
By the Son we are redeemed

So very long ago we fell. We lusted after things of no value. We did not cherish our walks with You in the cool of the evening. We set in motion events that would hold dire consequences. Your Son would have to pay a heavy price to ransom us from sin’s grip. Forgive us and draw us close. If possible, please let us amble through the Garden with You, yet again.

Thank You, Lord for every loving kindness. Amen!

Shimmering Hope

Isaiah 18:3-5
New International Version (NIV)

3 All you people of the world,
you who live on the earth,
when a banner is raised on the mountains,
you will see it,
and when a trumpet sounds,
you will hear it.
4 This is what the Lord says to me:
“I will remain quiet and will look on from my dwelling place,
like shimmering heat in the sunshine,
like a cloud of dew in the heat of harvest.”
5 For, before the harvest, when the blossom is gone
and the flower becomes a ripening grape,
he will cut off the shoots with pruning knives,
and cut down and take away the spreading branches.

Shimmering Presence

Far off a Light shines
Shimmering with burning heat
It waits in patient power
With justice to meed

It glows against the darkness
With terrible fierce fire
Yet It is a beckon of mercy
Against Its holy ire

Its smoke is seen in daylight
A pillar of fire by night
Protection for the holy
Sinners flee in fright

Justice for the wicked
Mercy for the poor and lame
Healing in Its fury
YHWH is His name

His Son He gave
On the altar of sin
Once for all
And made us friends

Let praise ring through the heavens
Let joy overflow the earth
The Light is coming soon
And give us our new birth

You are the Maker of Light, who is far greater than light itself. You wait in patient holiness to render justice to all creation and set things right. Open our hearts and minds. Fill us with Your presence. Let the Light of Glory transform the darkness in our souls.

Thank You, Father for all things great and small. May they bring us close to You. Amen!

Partnering Above

1 Corinthians 3:9
King James Version

For we are labourers together with God: ye are God’s husbandry, [ye are] God’s building.

Heavenly Partner

What is a partner?
Who is a friend?
Do they come in the beginning?
Or somewhere near the end?

Do they say nice things to you?
Encouraging and kind?
Do they shine a light in the darkness?
When the path is hard to find?

Do they reach out to you?
When you need a helping hand?
Will they even loan you money?
When it’s time to pay the band?

There is a special partner though
That God sent to save us all
Saved us from the debt we owed
And stopped our fatal fall

And now He partners with His friends
And asks us to plant and sow
Among His fields and buildings
But He makes all things grow

How good it is to know His voice
As He calls us all by name
One day the garden will be restored
And be free of guilt and shame

So until that time, we partner hard
We go as sheep amid the lions
Let them all hear the great glad news
And leave this world of sin behind

©2017 by William Pierce

You have partnered with those who would repent. Who have turned from their fallen ways and You consent to call us friends. May we work hard among Your fields and help to bring about a mighty harvest. It is You who makes all things grow but You have charged us to go and tell the Good News. May Its power change every life. Thank You for all things. Amen!

Take It Away

Romans 6:1
New International Version (NIV)

Dead to Sin, Alive in Christ

6 What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase?

Take My “S” Away

Who would have thought just what is at stake
When suddenly the “s” you decide you will take

A bird on the wing that flies like a swallow
Becomes a fat pig that lives in a wallow

With it you’re sure of yourself and can shun
Without it you’re always fighting like a hun

You can exercise daily and be hot enough to sear
Then suddenly you’re flabby and can’t get anyone’s ear

You might think you’re tiny and ever so small
Then find yourself running all over the mall

You might be real mad, full of scoff and scorn
Only to find you’re at the state fair roasting some corn

Off of an oak tree might fall a big stick
And when you wake up you were bitten by a tick

In the spring the bees come and start a big swarm
While in the winter we’re all trying just to stay warm

Now this is just meant to make us all smile
But let’s go a little further, He said go the extra mile

Some will ignore the Word that He spoke
They give no respect and fun they will poke

And though He always, takes up their slack
They never thank Him for being what they lack

So sweet Lord please don’t let me be so shallow
Help me lose the “s” in my life and learn how to hallow

We play with words each day as writers, but let us not play with Your Word or Your Way, for Yours is the only Way to salvation. Thank You for Your eternal patience and Your infinite grace and mercy. Be with all who read this prayer may they be blessed by Your presence. Heal all who need healing, feed all who need feeding, and move in the hearts of all mankind because we need You.

Thank You, Lord. Amen!

Brew Me Up, Scottie!

1 Corinthians 1:18
New International Version (NIV)

Christ Crucified Is God’s Power and Wisdom

18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

Tea茶 For Me and All I See

Camellia sinensis is some kind of name
With only three types they’re all quite the same
There’s black, green/white, and Chinese oolong
The only difference is to what process they belong

So whether it’s orange pekoe, earl gray, or a green
Each has their flavor and benefit, if you know what I mean
Lipton is pleasant and Twinings a delight
And if you dare try it, Canadian Tea will make you feel right

But I have traveled the wide world from stem unto stern
Done my very best to learn what I could learn
And I’m certain as certain, as certain can be
The very best † is found up on Calvary

It’s bitter and sweet, but overflows your cup with gladness
It takes away all stains, and puts an end to all sadness
So brew up a pot and give it to your neighbors
And bless them with a life of endless flavor

We are searching for an answer no longer, for You are the answer, You are the medicine, You are the Light unto salvation. You have brewed us up a mighty cup of mercy and grace. We give You praise and thanks.
