Just a Short Walk Away

Cabin with Watermark2

Dreaming of a Hideaway

It’s an unremarkable place
Just a short walk away
Down by the creek
Where the deer often play

There’s no tv or computer
And the phones are all gone
When you are there
You are really alone

Just the crickets and the frogs
Are all that you’ll hear
It’s just a place in the woods
To get your head clear

So quietly close the door
And leave the world behind
Then listen with your heart
So God’s peace you will find

The Blessing

Sunset Blessing

My Love

Her beauty makes me breathless
As she walks into the room
Her smile almost stops my heart
And nearly makes me swoon

My heart is pounding wildly
As her hand caresses mine
If I were not sitting
You’d soon find I was supine

It’s not a manly thing I know
To carry on this way
But there’s something in her face
That gives me feet of clay

And don’t even get me started
On her spirit and her mind
I could hunt a thousand years or more
And no one better could I find

And silly as it seems to some
Our meeting must surely have been divine
How else could I have found true love
Except by His design

A Cure for Sure

What of laughter?
Is it that elixir that we all seek?
Does it make things better?
When it lifts the tear-soaked cheek,

Does it keep us somehow warm?
When the world plays mean and rough,
Will give us the courage?
To call life’s bitter bluff,

Will it give a spark to life?
When we’re getting old and gray,
Does it give us any hope at all?
When the hound of hell begins to bay,

And can it keep a heart from breaking?
When the love of life is gone,
And give us strength to take a step?
And face the breaking of the dawn,

Yes, it does all of this and much more
If we can only muster up a grin,
Then finish with a belly laugh
And dare to live again

Where am I going?
This road winds before me
In a seemingly endless maze,
I take a turn and the light shines,
While with another choice
Darkness seems to hold a fatal grip,
I know my days are numbered
And time runs short,
If only I could stand above
And get a glance at the whole of it,
And yet…
Would that really help?
Would I run a better race?
I think it best to run with faith
To trust in something greater than myself,
Something stronger
And smarter,
Or better still in Love,
A love that holds me fast,
Against the jerks
And the jabs
Against all odds,
Until I reach the end
And I’m in His arms again.

So Real or So It Seemed

Matthew 15:15-20
New Living Translation (NLT)

15 Then Peter said to Jesus, “Explain to us the parable that says people aren’t defiled by what they eat.”
16 “Don’t you understand yet?” Jesus asked.
17 “Anything you eat passes through the stomach and then goes into the sewer.
18 But the words you speak come from the heart—that’s what defiles you.
19 For from the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, all sexual immorality, theft, lying, and slander.
20 These are what defile you. Eating with unwashed hands will never defile you.”

So Real or So It Seemed

I found myself in a dream last night
I was somewhere down around Mobile
It started out alright at first
And then it all became surreal

All the rivers were flowing uphill
And the trees grew upside down
The sky was pink as grapefruit
While the dirt was green, not brown

The birds all quoted Shakespeare
And the fish didn’t need to go to school
They learned all they needed to know
When they were tutored by the mule

And stranger still than all of that
Was when I turned around
And I was in my birthday suit
My clothes nowhere to be found

Right then a bus load of my friends
Pulled up and caused a cold, cold draft
That seemed to be the cruelest thing
Until they pointed at me and laughed

Well, I grabbed a branch from a nearby plant
And tried my best to cover up my vital parts
Until I realized that I was a victim of
Poison ivy and the itch that it imparts

As if that wasn’t bad enough
I broke out in multi-colored hives
And though I was quite beautiful
I wasn’t sure I would survive

And just as quickly as it had started
My dream suddenly came to an end
My wife had hogged all the covers
And I was freezing once again

Then I remembered our dinner talk
As we discussed the kids homework
And ate that enormous pizza pie
As my stomach now went berserk

Take some advice that is tried and true
It will save you lots of pain
“Be careful what you swallow now
Or you might have to swallow it again”

This world can seem so surreal if we don’t have You. You are our hope and our clarifier. In You and from You comes truth and that truth will set us free.

We thank You so!

Who We Are

Isaiah 64:8
New Living Translation (NLT)

8 And yet, O Lord, you are our Father.
We are the clay, and you are the potter.
We all are formed by your hand.

There is a part of everyone
That makes us who we are
Running like a river
Into a reservoir

It’s what fills our hearts and minds up
And gives us our identity
Without it controlling who we are
There’d be no you or me

The “I” in me can be hard to see
Like a babe in bath water tossed
Sometimes we’re driven to please the world
While our true selves are often lost

Almighty God has created us
And given us gifts from up above
They make us who we truly are
If we use them in His love

So do your best to live for Him
And You will have no regret
He is that “I” in all of us
We never must forget

You have made us and gifted us with talents that make us, not only who we are, but You make us whole. Without You we are wandering in a lonesome wilderness without identity or comfort. Please enter everyone’s hearts and minds and help them blossom into the creations You intended.

Thank You, Lord for every kindness.

The Pause That Refreshes

John 8:1-11
New Living Translation (NLT)

A Woman Caught in Adultery

8 Jesus returned to the Mount of Olives, 2 but early the next morning he was back again at the Temple. A crowd soon gathered, and he sat down and taught them. 3 As he was speaking, the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in the act of adultery. They put her in front of the crowd.

4 “Teacher,” they said to Jesus, “this woman was caught in the act of adultery. 5 The law of Moses says to stone her. What do you say?”

6 They were trying to trap him into saying something they could use against him, but Jesus stooped down and wrote in the dust with his finger. 7 They kept demanding an answer, so he stood up again and said, “All right, but let the one who has never sinned throw the first stone!” 8 Then he stooped down again and wrote in the dust.

9 When the accusers heard this, they slipped away one by one, beginning with the oldest, until only Jesus was left in the middle of the crowd with the woman. 10 Then Jesus stood up again and said to the woman, “Where are your accusers? Didn’t even one of them condemn you?”

11 “No, Lord,” she said.

And Jesus said, “Neither do I. Go and sin no more.”

Cacophonous Caterwauling

What in the world is this cacophony of sound
So many voices speaking makes me dumbfound

This one is sure that the world’s not flat
But another disagrees completely with that

Some think each day the Earth grows hot
While others are screaming, “It is not!”

The Republicats think we must spend money this way
Then the Demicans holler, “It’ll be a cold day!”

The hawks all want us to go fight in a war
But the doves all say, “It’s peace we can’t ignore”

Even in sports we can’t seem to find a plan
On whether we ought to kneel or to stand

I propose we all take a needed timeout
And see if we can’t find some other route

Perhaps if we stopped for a moment to listen
We might understand the other position

We might even come to change our own mind
When we hear the facts we so abruptly declined

And maybe, just maybe in that moment of time
With what seems like no reason or rhyme

God might be able to speak to our hard hearts
With wisdom and love only He can impart

We might even come to realize how silly we’ve been
Arguing over stuff that most surely will end

And then we might be able to rest in the night
Knowing that He protects us with all of His might

It is good to listen and hear another’s opinion, and to treat them with respect and grace. It is better still when we will listen to You. Help us to pause each day and wait upon You to speak to us. Your wisdom is the greatest treasure that is available to us here on Earth.

Thank You so!

No Chains Can Hold Us

John 8:36
New Living Translation (NLT)

36 So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free.

Redeemed, Released, Restored

Created in His image
Molded by His hand
Set forth in His Garden
To subdue and tend His Land

A paradise indescribable
With all we’d ever need
But we partook of rebellion
And became sin’s dark seed

We owed a debt for what we’d done
A price we could not pay
So we were cast out from our Home
On that most fateful day

How could we ever reconcile
Who was able to aspire
Not a single man was worthy
To release us from the mire

But our hope would shine one starry night
And light up you, O Bethlehem
A Savior Child would live and die
And take our punishment on Him

So rejoice and sing Alleluia!
We are freed from our fatal fall
Go shout it from every rooftop
It is His Heavenly call

We had fallen to the lowest depths of sin but You did not forget us or Your promise. A child was born, we were released from bondage, and everything was made right. Thank You, Lord! Thank You for Jesus! Amen!

There’s Life in the Express Lane

Mark 16:15-16
New International Version (NIV)

15 He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. 16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.

Nothing But…

I rise to a new day
Excited and glad
A promise I’m making
To love and be rad

No more stuttering around
I put stammering to an end
I’ll express myself with conviction
My beliefs to defend

Let my defamers all scatter
My detractors all flee
My tongue will speak truth
And It will set us all free

My God is in Heaven
Having walked on the Earth
I await His arrival
Having received the New Birth

His love is amazing
He paid the Bride’s Price
I am bought by His blood
Nothing else would suffice

But do not be fooled
For His wrath is extreme
And that day is coming
As was seen in John’s dream

So believe He will save you
And call on His name
Jesus was given all power
And can remove sin and shame

Please do it this moment
Don’t pause or hesitate
Procrastination stands like a spoiler
On this side of Heaven’s gate

He’ll lull you to sleep with
“Surely tomorrow will do”
Then Death will come calling
And this life is through

So don’t miss out
On what’s He’s stored up for you
Jesus stands at the Door
To carry you through

Then for ions and ions
We’ll give Him our praise
Then we’ll start it all over
As if it were just yesterday

Thank You for Your Word. Thank You for placing it in my heart. Today, help me to have It on my lips and to express It.

Why Can’t They See?

Job 15:31
New International Version (NIV)

31 Let him not deceive himself by trusting what is worthless,
for he will get nothing in return.

There are many who are cloaked in fraud
Who as wolves in sheep’s clothing reside
Always greeting us with a warm smile
Behind which their mischief can hide

But much worse than any of them
Is the deceiver whom we call a friend
Who greets us each day of our life
That charlatan who lives deep within

Oh! How devious is his disguise
As in the mirror he so cleverly hides
Passing judgment on everything
He needs only himself to decide

So surely we all should beware
Or our lives will be coming undone
For from all other evil we can flee
But ourselves we cannot outrun

We cloak ourselves in pride and pass judgment on things we do not know or understand. Please grant to us discernment that we might judge rightly. Lead us through the darkness of this world and keep us safe.

Thank You, Lord!
