What Ifs

What If

This week  I’ll be taking some time off, so I’m posting some old prayers from my Mail Chimp Days. Hope you won’t mind?

Psalm 139:14

I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.

Are you ever filled with “what ifs”…I am. What if I had done this? What if I had gone here? What if I had been a pilot, or a preacher, or a doctor? What if, what if…? “What ifs” seem harmless enough but they are spawned in fear and dwell in darkness. They are sirens of the sea calling you to destruction on the rocks. They are evil personified, disguised in seductive wrappings. Full of lust and absolutely no love,
they take the very best we are and cast it in the sewer. We are God’s creation, redeemed by Holy Blood, living in a Holy Temple, and holding a ticket for an eternal destination. Do not ponder “what ifs”. We are what we are and if we are His, then we are indeed wonderfully and marvelously made. Spend your time instead in praise and thanksgiving of what you are.

Father,

If I had a million years and could speak continually, I could only scratch the surface of thanking You enough for all You’ve done in my life. You placed me in a loving home. You granted me great parents and family. You situated me in a country with freedom and prosperity. And when I’ve sinned and fallen so short of what You had planned, You’ve pursued me, picked me up, and helped me back on my feet. All the time providing the only way to be made new. I am what I am Lord, and it is because of You. I thank You! I ask You to continue to make me more like Jesus.

Hear His Voice

Penchant

John 10:27
New King James Version (NKJV)

27 My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.

Penchant for Life

Driven like a leaf in the current of a river
Tossed about as a sailboat in the breeze
We are guided by unseen forces
They push us wherever they please

We are programmed as some grand computer
Our very essence gets a needed adjust
They give us our very own penchant
For the things that make us, “us”

Perhaps we are of a forceful behavior
Or maybe we are too shy to even speak
We might have a love art and music
Or climbing up to the highest peaks

But while we all have our personal preferences
We may still choose between right and wrong
For while our rhythm and tempo might already be set
It’s our lyrics that give meaning to life’s song

So no matter what drives you on in this world
No matter what gives meaning to you from within
Use it today in everything and in every way
To bring a joy to your life that will never end

Father,

Thank You for every kindness, for every blessing, for Jesus, who is our gentle Shepherd. We, who are called, hear His sweet voice and follow after Him. That is the only calling that is worthy of life. May every soul have ears that hear His voice.

Amen!

Will It Be There When I Need It?

Sympathy

1 Samuel 2:7-8
New Living Translation (NLT)

7 The Lord makes some poor and others rich;
he brings some down and lifts others up.
8 He lifts the poor from the dust
and the needy from the garbage dump.
He sets them among princes,
placing them in seats of honor.
For all the earth is the Lord’s,
and he has set the world in order.

Where Sympathy Does Not Reside

Well, one day we all need some sympathy
Whether with a coke or maybe some tea
The world gives us all of a slap to the head
And advice that’s not usually free

What is the reason and what is the rhyme
For this predicament you find yourself in
You must have either been cursed from above
Or just born under the penalty of sin

Or maybe the problem is not a problem at all
But just that you did not try
Perhaps if you stood on your own two feet
You’d have your own slice of the pie

Well, here is a twenty, now let me pass by
I’m really much too important to stay
So with Ray Bans on and Starbucks in hand
I’m off having done my good deed for today

Woe to the man who is given so much
But has not an ounce of compassion inside
His pride will drag him to darkness below
Where he’ll find that sympathy does not reside

Father,

Today grant me a heart filled with compassion for I too will one day need sympathy. One day I will bow before the judgment seat and be in great need. Have mercy on me now and change my heart.

Thank You, Lord!

Sympathy

Isn’t It Peculiar?

Peculiar

Exodus 23:25
New International Version (NIV)

25 Worship the Lord your God, and his blessing will be on your food and water. I will take away sickness from among you,

A Peculiar Blessing

Isn’t it a little peculiar
And just a tiny bit odd
We’re always glad to get the sunshine
But blame all the storms on God

We imagine He sits high on His throne
And ponders up punishment that’s due
Yet He sent us His Son, Jesus
Who gave His life for me and you

The air we breathe, the food we eat
It’s all a gift from above
We never get what we truly deserve
Instead we get mercy and love

Oh sure, we don’t all drive Mercedes
Or live in mansions grand
But we’re blessed with life
We’re created by His mighty hand

So try to pause…just once a day
And thank Him that you live
And look passed all life’s troubles and woes
To all the many blessings He gives

Father,

I know, because I have seen the life of Jesus, and all the blessings that the whole Earth receives each day from Your hand…You love us! It is not Your nature to sit and send storms and disasters to punish us. You have given us life and we must live it. If we choose to live it with You, then we can live without fear or anger. May everyone who faces trouble today, face it with You. There is no greater blessing.

Thank You!

The Straight and Narrow

Overcome

Revelation 12:11

11 They overcame him
by the blood of the Lamb
and by the word of their testimony;
they did not love their lives so much
as to shrink from death.

How to Overcome

Long before they ever died
They did not sit in the dark and cower
But made their battle over small things
Thus robbing the big ones of their power

Then when hard choices laid before them
The decision was already done
Their minds were made up long ago
And the battle already won

So train your mind and spirit
Train them every day
Then they will not turn to the right or left
But stay on God’s righteous way

Father,

Help us to stay upon the path to life. Let us not wander off and become lost among the glitter and allure of the world. May we become one with You so that we will not be overcome by evil but conquer it with Your truth and love.

Thank You, Lord. Amen!

Grateful for the Plan

Crescendo

Isaiah 33:15-17
New International Version (NIV)

15 Those who walk righteously
and speak what is right,
who reject gain from extortion
and keep their hands from accepting bribes,
who stop their ears against plots of murder
and shut their eyes against contemplating evil—
16 they are the ones who will dwell on the heights,
whose refuge will be the mountain fortress.
Their bread will be supplied,
and water will not fail them.
17 Your eyes will see the king in his beauty
and view a land that stretches afar.

The Maestro’s Plan

When the world seems hopeless
And God’s way you fail to understand
Do you sit and grumble
And question the wisdom of His plan

When hurricanes are swirling
And flood waters rise 8 feet tall
Do you praise Him for past blessings
Or just blame Him for it all

God’s put in place a master blueprint
Only He knows its reason or its rhyme
It’s unfolding right before our face
But just a little bit at the time

Like a mighty symphony it’s scored
With vast melodies of grace
A crescendo of love and mercy
That carries us through time and space

And we are lifted to a heavenly home
Where the music never ends
Rescued from a fate worse than death
By a Savior who calls us friends

Father,

How easy it is for our tongues to rise up in judgment, even against You. To speak as though we know what is good and evil, what is right and wrong. We are then just a slippery step away from pride, lust, coveting, envy, and every other sin. Keep us Lord from judging. From placing ourselves above You. You know what is best and You are making it unfold.

We ask Your forgiveness and mercy for judging and praise You for this amazing gift of life.  In the mighty name of Jesus. Amen!

Finite and Fine

Finite

Finite

Dictionary. Com defines finite, as it pertains to mathematics, to be:
1. (of a set of elements) capable of being completely counted.
2. not infinite or infinitesimal.
3. Not zero
So, let’s see how do we all “stack up” in terms of our finite-ness.

• Can we all be completely counted?

Genesis 16:10
New Life Version (NLV)

10 The angel of the Lord said to her, “I will give you so many people in your family through the years that they will be too many to number.”

Well, there’s obviously a limit to how many of mankind there are, but God must surely intend for there to be lots of us.

• Are we “too big for our britches” or “too small to count”?

James 4:14
New Living Translation (NLT)

14 How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog—it’s here a little while, then it’s gone.

This should help us realize the depth, the breath, and the height of our being…we like the fog are here then gone. But wait, there’s hope…

Matthew 10:28-31
New Living Translation (NLT)

28 “Don’t be afraid of those who want to kill your body; they cannot touch your soul. Fear only God, who can destroy both soul and body in hell. 29 What is the price of two sparrows—one copper coin? But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it. 30 And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. 31 So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows.

What kind of hope is that you ask, “Worth more than a flock of sparrows”? Remember, it’s not how much we value a flock of sparrows, but how much God values a flock of sparrows.

• Are we worthless?

John 3:16
New Living Translation (NLT)

16 “For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.

We’re very important to God or He would not have had Jesus do what He did – to die a gruesome death on a cross. He waits with open arms for all who will repent and turn from wickedness.

So, just how finite do we seem to be? At the moment, we are certainly not much more than a mist in the morning whether we’re a pauper or a king. We are more valuable than a bunch of birds, but we don’t need to get all puffed up about our importance because we’re not. Yet we know that we are enormously loved. Loved beyond anyway we have to measure just how loved we are. So while we are not important, or valuable, we are greatly valued by the Creator of the universe…How cool and reassuring is that? I’ll take that. How about you?

Father,

Thank You for caring so much and loving us so completely. May every person come to know how valued they are.

Be Careful What You Wish For

Anticipate

1 Corinthians 16:14
New International Version (NIV)

14 Do everything in love.

Anticipate Something More

Some men sit and ponder
Always wanting something more
Can’t work their iphone six
But 7 is in the store

So they sit all day and dream
Of new things they can buy
Maybe digital televisions
6 feet wide by 4 feet high

They look at their shiny cars
Getting older every day
When a Porsche comes screaming by them
Got to be theirs some way

Then maybe a big boat
A Rolex or Jet Ski
They work so very hard
How wrong can it be

The wife has a fur coat
The kids all have their own cars
Why not buy a golf cart
Or a trip to the stars

But no matter what they buy
It will never satisfy or fulfill
They’ll be left only to anticipate
What’s worthwhile and what’s real

Life, you see is much, much more
Than what we can possess
If it’s void of  the Creator’s love
It’s just plain…worthless

Father,

Help us to see and do all things in love. To take action through the heart and to filter our deeds through its pure and crystal clear vision.

Thank You for loving us.

Lifted Up

Elevale

Mark 9:34-37
New Life Version (NLV)

34 They did not answer. They had been arguing along the road about who was the greatest. 35 Jesus sat down and called the followers to Him. He said, “If anyone wants to be first, he must be last of all. He will be the one to care for all.” 36 Jesus took a child and stood it among them. Then He took the child up in His arms and said to the followers, 37 “Whoever receives one of these little children in My name, receives Me. Whoever will receive Me, receives not Me, but Him Who sent Me.”

Elevate

Lift your eyes
Lift your voice
See what’s to see
And make a choice

Lift your spirits
Lift your hands
Be of profit
Do what you can

Lift your brother
Lift them all
Helping others
Great and small

Lift up God
Lift up praise
His name laud
For all your days

Father,

Give us hearts of servants. Help us to humble ourselves that You might lift us up, for those You elevate are elevated indeed.

Thank You, Lord!

Educated Early On

Educate

Proverbs 22:6
New International Version (NIV)

6 Start children off on the way they should go,
and even when they are old they will not turn from it.

I tried writing a little poem today about “educate”, but with it being a holiday…just couldn’t seem to make it happen. Luckily I remembered Robert Fulghum’s, “All I Needed to Know I Learned in Kindergarten”. It certainly reminds us of much that is really worth learning, as does Proverb 22 that I quoted from above.

Hope you all had a very good Labor Day holiday and are ready to get busy and “write” the wrongs of the world in what’s left of 2017. Oh! All of you along the Atlantic seaboard, stay alert and stay safe as Irma approaches.

Father,

As bright as we are, we still are in very much need. We need You. We need Your wisdom. We need Your strength. We need Your love. Hold us close and keep us from the darkness.

Thank You!
