How To Kill A Lion

1 Peter 5:7-9
New Living Translation (NLT)

7 Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.
8 Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.
9 Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith. Remember that your family of believers all over the world is going through the same kind of suffering you are.

Don’t Blink

The lion is on the prowl, no one is safe
He lays in wait, for you to come
In the brush he sits, with muscles rippling
Like the beating, of some death drum

Tense and ready, he prepares to pounce
His heart is pounding, his claws engarde
His breathing heavy, his nostrils flared
He’ll take your life, without regard

When you meet, eyes locked in contact
Do not look away, nor even blink
If he senses fear, the slightest inkling
He’ll be upon you, quick as a wink

Awesome power, stands before you
You’re no match, alone you’ll die
His mighty roar, is meant to scare you
Let your faith, be your reply

Then he’ll fall, before you cringing
No more the tyrant, now in chains
The Prince of Darkness, on knees now bending
The King of Kings, our friend now reigns

You warn us of our great enemy who waits for us as a roaring lion. In the hour that we meet him let our faith save us. Thank You, Lord for giving us the weapon that we need.

Aliens, Ernest T, and Me

I thought it might be nice tonight to have some fun. In case some of you have never heard of Ernest T. Bass from the Andy Griffith Show, I’m listing a link to a tribute to him from YouTube (you might not want to watch it all since it’s fifteen minutes…then again). I hope you enjoy it and my poem that “pokes a little fun” at extraterrestrial encounters. Enjoy!

1 Peter 5:8
New Living Translation (NLT)

8 Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.

Shocking Encounter

I had quite a shock last night
As I was awakened from of a dream
Everything that was happening
Was not as it might seem

I found myself a’floating
Like down a quiet and gentle stream
When all of a sudden
I was caught in an alien tractor beam

And soon they had me a’flying
Up where the moon sits and glows
Then they transported me inside their ship
And took away my clothes

Then they laid me down upon
A table cold and wide
And very soon I noticed
There was someone by my side

One quick glance was all it took
I knew that face for sure
It was Ernest T from Mayberry
And he was holding a brochure

It said they had a transplant sale
If you cared to improve your mind
And for $100 you could gladly swap
With anyone you could find

Well Ernest T as usual
Was trying to win himself a girl
So he just picked me out at random
And said, “Let’s give his head a whirl!”

Well sure enough, they hooked us up
Inside a treacherous device
And it began to bang and boom
And then it sliced and diced

When I awoke back in my room
With the dawning of the light
I seemed to be a’talking strange
And a’wanting to throw every rock in sight

Could it be they were really here
Those green men in the sky
Who kidnapped me so suddenly
And cause my brain to fry

If they were and ever swing back by
I hope they’ll come around
I’d like to pay them back for this
With a big ole rock I found

While humor is a great gift, let us not take lightly the enemy we face. Please be with us and keep us strong and sober-minded. Thank You!

The Pause That Refreshes

James 4:13-15
New Living Translation (NLT)

13 Look here, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we are going to a certain town and will stay there a year. We will do business there and make a profit.” 14 How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog—it’s here a little while, then it’s gone. 15 What you ought to say is, “If the Lord wants us to, we will live and do this or that.”

Bewitched, Bewildered, and Agile

We are so very agile
As we’re heading out our door
We communicate as we travel
With the latest gadgets from the store

We’ve got cell phones and laptops
And Apple Cardiios to check our heart
While the GPS is quickly plotting
Our every move from where we start

We can check on mom and pop
As we’re heading into work
And be sure that our investments
Did not tank and go berserk

We can plan to go to lunch
With a friend we haven’t seen
Oh! And does the dentist have an opening
For a cleaning in between

How’s the weather for this evening
Will it interfere with the plan
Can we load our stuff in the pickup
Or will we need the big sedan

But most days we seem so busy
In our agile lifestyle sort of way
That the one thing we should be doing
Gets put off for another day

When God above will meet us
And hear our plaintive cry
We often hit the hold button
And tell Him to leave a reply

I guess we think He understands
We have so much to do
Perhaps He needs a mobile app
To get through to me and you

We live our lives as if in a whirlwind; help us to slow down and listen, to meet with You early in the day and late in the evening. Let us not put You off as though You were a genie in a bottle, assigned to grant our wishes. You are God and there is no other. You are our only hope. Be with us always. Thank You!

Loophole of Love

Genesis 3:4-6
New Living Translation (NLT)

4 “You won’t die!” the serpent replied to the woman. 5 “God knows that your eyes will be opened as soon as you eat it, and you will be like God, knowing both good and evil.”

6 The woman was convinced. She saw that the tree was beautiful and its fruit looked delicious, and she wanted the wisdom it would give her. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. Then she gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it, too.

The Amazing Loophole

We had a great big problem
And there seemed to be no cure
God had said if you eat of this
You’re gonna die for sure

Well Eve was tempted by that snake
And then Adam ate as well
And ever since that moment
We’ve been faced with living hell

Then we tried to do our very best
By upholding of the law
But not a single person
Could live without a flaw

But God with His amazing mercy
Had always had a plan
His Son would take our punishment
And be redemption for each man

So Jesus came and took our blows
And was the greatest loophole that’s ever been
He left that ole snake a defeated foe
And put an end to all our sin

Perhaps you want to give Him thanks
And wonder what might suffice
Just believe the Father sent Him
And that He’s our resurrected sacrifice

Then Heaven’s door will be opened
And you’ll be invited in
Not as a slave or servant
But as a child and a friend

You have provided a way for us to be redeemed. We do not deserve it but we are eternally grateful. Please make Your name great throughout the world so that all might hear and accept Your gift.

Make Some Room

James 4:8
New Living Translation (NLT)

8 Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world.

The Study

Here’s a proposition
That might just make your day
Set aside some room inside you
Where you can come and pray

Just a mere few minutes
Is all He’s asking for
Where you can shut the world out
Like the closing of the door

And there in reverent silence
You can share your heart and soul
And reveal your deepest secrets
Then request He take control

He’s happy when you come to Him
He’s delighted to reply
He’s proven that He loves you
When Jesus came and died

So take a little moment
And make Him a little space
I promise you won’t regret it
When you feel His warm embrace

You promise to come to us if we will reach out to You. We come to You therefore asking for Your presence in our lives and seeking Your favor. You alone are our hope. Thank You for loving us all.

Just Draw Near

Hosea 6:6
New Living Translation (NLT)

6 I want you to show love, not offer sacrifices.
I want you to know me more than I want burnt offerings.

Entertaining the Masses

What must we do to peak your interest, or to whet your appetite
Must we dance on pin heads, or sprout wings and take to flight

Must we always invite you in, and bring forth bread and wine
Must we give our souls away, just to have you always whine

Must we have sports events, and schools to raise your child
Must we speak in tongues unknown, and act as if we’re wild

Must we have rock bands and comfy seats, like in an auditorium
Or pews real hard and liturgy, that sounds like a scriptorium

Why is it not enough for us, just to gather in His house
To hear His word and sing His praise, and give a happy shout

He’s done so much to save our souls, with His amazing grace
You’d think we’d be ecstatic, just to be in His holy place

Your Holy House is a place where we should meet You with reverence. Yet, did not King David play his harp and dance in the street as he praised Your name. Help us to make our bodies Your holy temple and our lives into living sacrifices. Let us fulfill Your commandments by loving You totally and our neighbors as ourselves, not in doctrines and deeds. Thank You, Lord for loving us, in spite of ourselves.

Tune In and Tune Up

James 4:8
New Living Translation (NLT)

8 Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world.

My Static Life

It seems there’s always something
That wants a bit of me
It buzzes and it hisses
And just won’t let me be

It might be my telephone
Or my favorite tv show
The kids might come through running
Or the dog might need to go

The yard might need some mowing
And a haircut’s overdue
Or the car might need a washing
There’s just so much I need to do

It seems I need a slower pace
To have some time for prayer
Then maybe, Oh! just maybe
I could know that You are there

You’d meet me in that special time
And slowly change my heart
I’d read and learn Your holy word
And the wisdom it imparts

So help me, Lord to make the time
To daily tune the static out
I know You’re there and waiting
If I only will call out

We are pulled in every direction by the world. Help us to pause each day and commune with You. You are our Teacher and we need to learn from You.

Thank You, Lord!

Jump Into His Arms

Ephesians 2:8-9
New Living Translation (NLT)

8 God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. 9 Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.

We arise early in the day
And begin a long march to the sea
The path is an arduous one
Winding through many rocks and trees

Each step will take its toll
Each fall will leave its mark
Like an axe upon a tree
Cutting deep within its bark

But soon this struggle will end
As we top our last plateau
While we stand wide-eyed with awe
And peer down at the sea below

And then the court will convene
For on justice it will not budge
And evoke a reading of our charge
“What say ye?”asks the judge

And there atop that lonely butte
A choice all must then embrace
Whether to stay atop our mountain of sin
Or jump into the sea of grace

Thank You! We stand before You and plead the blood of Jesus. We have no other defense, no other hope.

Carve Me a New One, Please

Ezekiel 36:26
New Living Translation (NLT)

26 And I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart.

Carved Upward

We are being changed
Carved to make us right
Our hard hearts sliced into
To fill us with the light

We had to make that choice
To let him make us anew
It is the only way
The only thing to do

So let us be at peace
For the master holds the blade
Our hope is in his hands
And the price he came to pay

A better day awaits us
We’ll be changed forevermore
A new life is beginning
On that beautiful shore

Come and change our hearts. Cut away the hardness and fill us with Your light and love. Prepare us for the life abundant.

Thank You so!

Proverbs 15:15
New Living Translation (NLT)

15 For the despondent, every day brings trouble;
for the happy heart, life is a continual feast.

This poem is metered
In an undulating way
To reveal the rhythm
Of its to and fro sway

It does this without
Any meaning for the words
It simply feels good
If you’re a wordy nerd

It lifts up its voice
And then it trickles off
There is a reason
And you had better not scoff

The rhythmic meter
Of its meaningless refrain
Will put you to sleep
Like a shot of novacaine

So Insomniacs
Keep this poem close at hand
Read it once or twice
And you’ll be off to dreamland

Thank You for a happy heart. It is a weapon that defeats the troubles of this world. It is the result of the hope we have in Jesus. May all who read this find hope and joy.
