Will That be a Debit or a Credit?

Partake

Philippians 2:14-16
New Living Translation (NLT)

14 Do everything without complaining and arguing, 15 so that no one can criticize you. Live clean, innocent lives as children of God, shining like bright lights in a world full of crooked and perverse people. 16 Hold firmly to the word of life; then, on the day of Christ’s return, I will be proud that I did not run the race in vain and that my work was not useless.

Watch What You Partake

We are what we eat
Or that’s what they say,
Perhaps we should be careful
What we ingest today,

There’s lots of things out there
That we might imbibe,
That are not fit
For the ear or the eye,

They’ll lead you down paths
That wind through dark places,
That rob you of virtue
And leave you with sin’s wages,

So be careful to read
What’s on the menu,
It might seem tasty
Until the check comes due

Father,

We are faced with many choices in this life. Today and every day be with us all and show us what we should be partaking of in every area of life. You are our hope and our strength. Thank you!

Forged by … a Toaster?

Mallet

Hebrews 4:12
New International Version (NIV)

12 For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

Mallet

It’s like a sissy hammer,
This thing that’s made of wood,
It’s made for hitting something
Just not as hard as you could,

Instead of using brute force,
We coax it into place,
We do not want to dent it
Or do damage to its face,

Give me a big ol’ ball peen,
Then quickly step aside,
For I’ll be making changes
That need to be applied,

It’s swifter and it’s kinder
Just to go on and end the pain,
There is no reason to delay
And nothing much to gain,

So think it over while you can
And try not to delay,
When you’re using just a mallet
Most things won’t obey

Father,

Heat us up and place us in Your forge. Place us upon Your anvil and change us with Your hammer sure and mighty. May we be changed into silver and gold. Precious in Your sight and worthy for Your service.

Running Together

Parallel

Matthew 16:25-27
New Living Translation (NLT)

25 If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it. 26 And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul? 27 For the Son of Man will come with his angels in the glory of his Father and will judge all people according to their deeds.

Gain and Loss

Gain and loss
Loss and gain
Parallel thoughts
Hard to explain

Never seem to touch
In differing planes
Hold onto life
And only death remains

Follow the shepherd
Let loose of it all
Hear only his voice
And answer only his call

Loss and gain
Gain and loss
United as one
On a rugged cross

Seemed like a good time to write a “parallel” poem!

At Odds With One Another

Never touching,
Never linked,
Separated in space,
Eternally out-of-sync,

Nothing in common
Nothing to compare,
No reason to communicate,
No reason to share,

On differing planes,
With endless spaces,
Going the same directions
But to different places,

So how is it possible?
On such a planet unique,
That our chances for harmony
Are always so bleak,

We all share the Earth
But we don’t seem to care,
Many are hungry,
Many are bare,

And we’re always warring
With no end in sight,
It’s not even about winning
But supplying the fight,

Oh! Father in Heaven
Help us see the light,
Please join us together,
Please help us unite

Father,

We seek after our own ways. We see only our selfish desires. Grant us eyes that see and ears that hear the cries of those in need. May we come to realize that our lives are but a vapor in a whirlwind. We are here and gone before we know it. Help us turn loose of this world and chase after You with all our strength. Thank You for caring!

There is No Magic

Genie

Revelation 21:4
New Living Translation (NLT)

4 He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.”

Genie in a Bottle

He walked the lonely alley way
In search of treasure lost,
A chance to make a dime or two
From things that had been tossed,

And from those meager findings
Eke out a living bare,
Perhaps to eat a burger,
Perhaps a drink to share,

He had chosen; some years ago
To live a hobo’s life,
The pain was just too much to bear
When he had lost of his wife,

So he had hit the lonely road
To try and end his pain,
But years had passed with much regret
And still his pain remained,

If he could but find that fabled bottle
With a genie locked inside,
He’d make a wish that she’d return
And they’d live on side by side,

But there are no magic bottles
Filled with wishes for us to find,
So for now this one will have to do
To paralyze his mind

Father,

You alone are our hope. When things go wrong, when there is pain, when things simply do not make sense…You are with us. We thank You for caring, for loving us back to life.

When Angels Fret

Fret

Hebrews 13:2
New Living Translation (NLT)

2 Don’t forget to show hospitality to strangers, for some who have done this have entertained angels without realizing it!

Sylvia

She arrived on the bus from Denver
With one bag and a face filled with a frown
And proceeded to check in at Ariel’s
A boarding house out near the edge of town

Next morning she awoke at sunrise
Had breakfast of bacon and eggs
Then walked through each business in Sibley
And looked for any job that she could barter or beg

By noon she had run the full gamut
The only one left was Charley’s saloon
So she grabbed the “help wanted” placard
And entered into the dark and dreary room

There at the bar stood a man in an apron
And with the very best smile she could smile
Said, “I like to apply for this position”
“Even if it’s for only a short while.”

“Well, lady, that’s fine if you’re qualified?
“There’s not many folks around here who are.”
“I need someone to play a little piano”
“And maybe give me a break from the bar.”

“I’ve played in church since I was fifteen”
“And though I’ve never tended bar for even a day”
“I know I can do it, if you teach me”
“And I’ve got to earn money some way.”

Well, ok, we’ll give it a chance for the moment
But you have to play something with cheer
This ain’t no revival I’m running here lady
If you want to get paid, we’ve got to sell beer

She walked to the keyboard in silence
And struck up a tune full of the blues
Then sang with the voice of an angel
And when finished asked, “How will that do?”

Charley near swallowed his cigar
As he awoke from the trance he was in
He said, “That was absolutely amazing!”
“I’ll see you back here at seven”, he said with a grin.

“Oh hey!” he cried as she opened the door
“What is your name, by the way?”
With a frown on her face she thought for a time
“Sylvia” was all she would say

That evening the saloon was near empty
As Sylvia sat down to play her first tune
The locals were all sitting in silence
Except for the sound of the occasional spittoon

But then as the music ascended
And her voice filled the dark, dreary space
People were held in the arms of her song
And mesmerized by its winsome embrace

This went on for a week or more
And the crowds grew larger each night
Charley was never so happy
Because business was never so bright

But things were about to get sticky
Next night when a man with a beard
Started asking questions about Sylvia
And just when and how she had appeared

Well when Sylvia saw him from a distance
She ran out the back in a mad dash
And made her way over to Ariel’s
And started packing as quick as a flash

Then suddenly came a knock at her door
And she almost jumped out of her skin
But let out a sigh of blessed relief
When Charley asked, “Sylvia, may I come in?”

She opened the door and pulled Charley through
And said, “I’m sorry, Charley, but it’s time that I was gone.”
“I understand,” Charley replied, “but I want you to know”
“We can persuade this guy to leave just you alone.”

That’s nice of you, my dear Charley
And I wish there was a way not to run
But my story’s too long and my time’s too short
And I must be gone by the rising of the sun

I won’t ask you any more questions then
But here’s the money that you have earned
Now won’t you let my friend, Jerry, drive you
Over to the next town where you won’t be discerned

That man is watching the bus station
He’ll spot you before you get near
We’ve all come to admire and adore you
Won’t you let us help get you out of here

With that she kissed him and cried
He said, “Now don’t you go and fret”
“You can’t find too much here in Sibley”
“But we haven’t lost one friend yet”

So she left that night in Jerry’s backseat
Then boarded the bus in Baxter down the road
We never knew why she was running
Or why she carried such a great load

And Charley’s saloon is slow once again
But it will never be quite the same
The memory of the music will always remain
As will the girl with only Sylvia as a name

What Turns the Crank?

Crank

1 Corinthians 13:4-7
New Living Translation (NLT)

4 Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud 5 or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. 6 It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. 7 Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.

The Crank

I wondered when I saw him
His face a sour scowl
What had made him turn that way?
His demeanor cold and foul,

What tragic event had left him
Without happiness or grace?
That had carved a surly frown
Upon his aging, craggy face,

So I asked the postman
Who had known for many years,
Why was he such a lonesome crank?
And why some many tears?

He’s been that way for years and years
Since way back in ’82,
When things went wrong one tragic day
And his life became so blue,

The loss was just too great for him,
It left his heart in pieces broken,
He could not quite recover
From the words that she had spoken,

They had met one summer’s night
When the stars and planets danced,
The aura of her beauty
Had left him in a trance,

He was thirty-two
And she but twenty-six,
Yet love soon bloomed and blossomed
With the kissing of their lips,

Then days became weeks and months
While their love grew deeper yet,
Until at last on bended knee
He pledged his troth without regret,

She gave a glad, excited “Yes!”
And held him tight to her chest,
‘I’ll marry you for certain”
But there’s one thing I must request,

I’ve spent my life in tiny towns
But I long for so much more,
If you’ll just move into the city
I’ll marry you for sure!

But my business is a family-one
Built with my father’s sweat,
How can I leave that all behind?
And not repay him that great debt?

“Then I must decline”, she sadly said
And though it breaks my heart,
I feel must pursue my dreams
And so I must depart,

And that my friend is how it came
That he wears such a face of gloom,
He chose to pay an honor’s debt
And not become a happy groom,

So if you find a love that’s true
And your hearts begin to bloom,
Do not throw away your single chance
Or you might be left with only gloom.

Father,

Please open our eyes to the power of love. In a world filled with doubt and fear, it is the key to the door of happiness. May we all find the door, unlock the lock, and be willing to walk in. Thank You, Lord!

What Makes Up Your Song?

Song

Romans 12:4-5
New Living Translation (NLT)

4 Just as our bodies have many parts and each part has a special function, 5 so it is with Christ’s body. We are many parts of one body, and we all belong to each other.

The Truth of the Song

It seems so very simple
If you give it just a glance
But a song is made of many parts
If you give it half a chance

First it has a melody
Some music, if you will
A composition of the soul
To give the heart a thrill

Yet hand in hand the lyrics walk
To give meaning to the tale
Without those very special words
The song’s story would surely fail

The story’s set in verses
Each one tells us but a part
Followed by the same refrain
That sets each verse apart

Then every song must have a beat
To set the tapping of the drum
It sets the tone of how it feels
And starts the listener to hum

And there exists a genre
That envelops it all the while
It might be folk or roll and rock
That gives away its style

So you see, as with many things
They’re more complicated than they appear
And we must know what’s going on out of sight
Before their value becomes quite clear

I’ll Never Be The Same

Disrupt

John 10:9-11
King James Version (KJV)

9 I am the door: by me if any man enters in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.
10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. 11 I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.

Life Disrupted

Right in the middle
It happened so quickly,
Before I knew it
It had up and hit me,

It was a thought so certain
A message quite clear,
It made me think about
Just why I was here,

So I set out to pondering
The meaning, the reason,
Was there some kind of purpose?
Some special season?

But after I had thought
For nigh onto a year,
I could not for the life of me
Figure out why I was here,

Then I met a man
With eyes shining bright,
Who asked to sit down
And share some insight,

“I’ve been watching you struggle”
“For a very long time”,
“About what is the reason”
“What is the rhyme?”,

“And I decided to drop in”
“And give you a hint”,
“About how you should live”
“How your time should be spent”,

“God made the heavens”,
“He made them for you”,
“Life is a gift”,
“There is but one thing to do”,

“Begin each new day”
“With a song in your heart”,
“And be grateful to Him”
“For all He imparts”,

“There’s really no more”
“That He wants you to do”,
“Just tell everyone”
“They can start life anew”,

With that he was gone
And that’s all that he instructed,
But I was never so glad
To be so completely disrupted,

You see, now I’m not striving for
Fame and notoriety,
I know God will be happy
If I just live life abundantly.

Fraught with Froth

Froth

Luke 8:17
New Living Translation (NLT)

17 For all that is secret will eventually be brought into the open, and everything that is concealed will be brought to light and made known to all.

Froth

There is a froth
That we’ve come to adore,
Sitting atop a latte
Makes us want more and more,

As we sit and slowly sip
With friends and family,
It makes us think
“How sweet life can be!”

But there is a fierce froth
That’s quite different indeed,
That’s caused by the waves
As they roll in, then recede,

This churning and swirling
Wreaks havoc on the beach,
Bringing up what’s been hidden
What’s been just out of reach,

Our lives are all filled
With such things hidden away,
That will be revealed by the Light
On some future day,

Perhaps it would be better
Than another latte in hand,
To fall on our knees
And confess while we can,

Then life will be sweeter
Sweeter than any libation,
Because we heeded His warning
And accepted His invitation.

Father,

How quick You are to forgive, if we will but repent. Thank You for Your most generous invitation to life. May all who read this accept it and live.

An Essence of Luminescence

Luminescent

Exodus 34:29
New Living Translation (NLT)

29 When Moses came down Mount Sinai carrying the two stone tablets inscribed with the terms of the covenant, he wasn’t aware that his face had become radiant because he had spoken to the Lord.

Light in the Darkness

Fill me up, Lord
Make me overflow,
Emitting Your presence
Everywhere that I go,

Like a tiny lighthouse
Luminescent in the night,
Guiding sailors homeward
With its welcoming light,

The waves pound the shoreline,
The wind tears at the sails,
We’d surely be lost
Except Your love never fails,

So throw out the lifeline
To those who are adrift,
And bring them on board
By the power of Your gift

Father,

Without Your light we would be in hopeless darkness. Yet, You are here with us, just as You promised. Thank You for the Light.
