Such As This

Such a Light

Luke 2:8-11
New Living Translation (NLT)

The Shepherds and Angels

8 That night there were shepherds staying in the fields nearby, guarding their flocks of sheep. 9 Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared among them, and the radiance of the Lord’s glory surrounded them. They were terrified, 10 but the angel reassured them. “Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people. 11 The Savior—yes, the Messiah, the Lord—has been born today in Bethlehem, the city of David!

Such a Savior

Such great love,
Beyond what I can see,
Giving everything I need,
Demanding not a thing from me,

Such great trust,
The father’s will be done,
Even unto death,
Before the setting of the sun,

Such great power,
Love will conquer all,
His word made flesh,
To save us from the fall.

Father,

You have given us a gift beyond measure, a love immeasurable, a light within the darkness. Thank You, Lord for You have sent Love unto us and He has conquered the darkness.

The Loss

Such Great Loss

2 Corinthians 4:17-18
New Living Translation (NLT)

17 For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever! 18 So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.

Such Great Loss

What could I do or say?
What words could give relief?
What gesture could convey?
The depth of this great grief,

A parent should not stand
Over a child being laid to rest,
The sorrow’s too hard to understand,
The pain too much to be expressed,

So walk with them and be a friend,
Listen more than you try to speak,
There’s nothing in words they’ll comprehend
When a hug is all they seek.

Father,

You alone know the full grief of the loss of a child. A grief so great that the Earth shook, the sun turned dark, and the angels waited for the command to rescue him…but you gave him up for us. Thank You!

Timeless

Time

Revelation 21:1-4
New Living Translation (NLT)

The New Jerusalem

21 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the old heaven and the old earth had disappeared. And the sea was also gone. 2 And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven like a bride beautifully dressed for her husband.

3 I heard a loud shout from the throne, saying, “Look, God’s home is now among his people! He will live with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them. 4 He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.”

His Time

On our daily path it seems
That God is slow to fulfill His scheme,

Why be so long to bring an end
To all to all the evil, all the sin,

Why are children left to cry?
Why must good folks early die?

Why not with Your mighty hand
Bring peace to all these warring lands?

Why not with a single word
Have justice to the world transferred?

Why does it take so very long
For someone who is so very strong?

Then a voice so mild and meek
Of time and space began to speak,

“What might seem to take so long”
“Might be moving right along”,

“To us who are eternal beings”
“Time really has no special meaning”,

“We were placing all things right”
“When first the world came into sight”,

“A billion years might not seem too quick”
“But on Heaven’s clock it’s just a tick”,

“So be patient while we work this out”
“It will come to an end with angel shout”,

“Then we will live in peace sublime”
“And nevermore speak of time”.

Father,

We yield to You in all things for You see what we cannot, You do what we cannot, and You are what we are not. Mighty is our Lord and He comes quickly. Thank You, Lord!

The New Garden

The River

Revelation 22:1-5
New Living Translation (NLT)

22 Then the angel showed me a river with the water of life, clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb. 2 It flowed down the center of the main street. On each side of the river grew a tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, with a fresh crop each month. The leaves were used for medicine to heal the nations. 3 No longer will there be a curse upon anything. For the throne of God and of the Lamb will be there, and his servants will worship him. 4 And they will see his face, and his name will be written on their foreheads. 5 And there will be no night there—no need for lamps or sun—for the Lord God will shine on them. And they will reign forever and ever.

The River

There is a river sweet and fair,
That gently flows without a care,
No need for sun or even moon,
The Light of God shines bright as noon,

The Tree of Life on each bank stands,
Its leaves for the healing of the lands,
Its fruits each month are sheer delight,
His name on every forehead in plain sight,

Its waters provide for life everlasting,
He knows all we need without ever asking,
The curse has ended to the delight of all,
The air is full of worship from the big and the small,

So leave all of your belongings,
All of your stuff and your things,
And come live in God’s garden,
Where we’re all free once again.

Father,

How blessed we are because one day, as sure as sure can be, your people will live on that river! Hallelujah!

That Night

The Stars All Fell

John 8:12
New International Version (NIV)

12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

The Stars All Fell

Long ago before we met,
I shunned your love without regret,
Some would come to tell your tale
But they would make me feel like hell,

As they would tell of eternal flames
And all the devil’s crafty games,
And try to make me come by fear
“Do it now; because death is near”,

“What if you were to die today?”,
“What do you think that god would say?”,
I did not know, I did not care,
I simply ran away from there,

Then I began to drink and drug,
I hid all my fears under that selfish rug,
Until one night in a country field
I prayed a prayer and I was healed,

It was such a simple request,
How could it bring me so much rest?,
I only asked if you were there
That you would show me that you cared,

Then suddenly the stars all fell
In blinding light, with fiery tails,
And I turned over and hid my eyes
Half expecting my demise,

But when I arose, I saw anew,
You did not hate, that was untrue,
I blamed you for what others had said,
They preached fear, but you spoke love instead,

My eyes were opened on that night,
As your true nature was in plain sight,
When I saw you as you really are,
You are love and never far,

So when I stand before your throne
And I must face you all alone,
I will not tremble, I will not shake,
This simple statement I will make,

“Lord, I know that your love is true”,
“And there is nothing that I can do”,
“You proved it to me on that night”,
“When the stars all fell and gave off your light”.

Father,

Thank You for sending Your Son, Jesus to rescue us. There is nothing we can do, but believe You sent Him and that He was resurrected.

He Will See Me

Confused

1 Samuel 16:6-8
New Living Translation (NLT)

6 When they arrived, Samuel took one look at Eliab and thought, “Surely this is the Lord’s anointed!”

7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Don’t judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The Lord doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

8 Then Jesse told his son Abinadab to step forward and walk in front of Samuel. But Samuel said, “This is not the one the Lord has chosen.”

Double Exposure

To some it seems I hung the moon,
To them I can do no wrong,
While others think me such a “stinker”
It’s to the devil I must belong,

And in the middle there are those
Who really could care less,
They can take or leave me in a moment
Because to them I neither sicken nor impress,

So take me as you see me,
I’m really neither of the extremes,
I’m just a simple, country boy
Or at least that’s how it seems,

Oh yeah, I have my good days
But my chances to not sin are slim,
There’s only one way I get by
And that’s to depend on only him,

So it really doesn’t matter
How the world perceives me to be,
One day I’ll stand before the Lord
And he’ll see the one and only me.

Father,

We come to You knowing that we cannot hide a thing from You. Have mercy upon us and move within us, that we might be pleasing in Your sight.

The Volcano

Volcano

Proverbs 18:21
New Living Translation (NLT)

21 The tongue can bring death or life;
those who love to talk will reap the consequences.

The Whip

It starts with a rumble and a roar,
Then it rushes up from far below,
The feelings cannot be controlled
Like an eruption of a fiery volcano,

I try my best; to hold it within
To smother what’s building inside,
But the anger soon takes control
And there’s finally nowhere to hide,

A hard master it rules with a whip
And cracks it loudly over my head,
The sting of its strains cut deep,
The result of what I have said,

The tongue is the culprit at hand,
It’s speaks at the drop of a hat,
A soldier you must hold at bay
Or forever be ready for combat.

Father,

Help us give heed to our minds and not jump feet first into fighting. Anger is a hard taskmaster. May we always be seekers of peace.

Guided By Love

Life Dance

John 8:21-23
New Living Translation (NLT)

The Unbelieving People Warned

21 Later Jesus said to them again, “I am going away. You will search for me but will die in your sin. You cannot come where I am going.”
22 The people asked, “Is he planning to commit suicide? What does he mean, ‘You cannot come where I am going’?”
23 Jesus continued, “You are from below; I am from above. You belong to this world; I do not.

Life’s Dance

We dance upon the mountain’s ridge
Up high above the clouds,
We dare to press our feeble luck
By listening to the roaring crowd,

They sing a song of jealousy,
They sing of great despair,
A time when we all walked with God
In a garden now laid bare,

How can we ever find our way?
How do we plot a course?
Do we travel by the starry sky?
Or some secret compass endorse?

Perhaps a better plan might be
To employ a guide who knows the way,
Someone who walked our crooked path
But did not falter and did not sway,

Someone, whose gentle hands were pierced,
Someone who bore our load,
Someone whose back the whip laid bare,
Someone who paid the debt we owed.

Father,

Thank You for sending Jesus. He came to seek and save the lost…that’s all of us. May we hear His voice and follow. Amen!

Just a Closer Walk

This Road

Psalm 23
New Living Translation (NLT)

1 The Lord is my shepherd;
I have all that I need.
2 He lets me rest in green meadows;
he leads me beside peaceful streams.
3 He renews my strength.
He guides me along right paths,
bringing honor to his name.
4 Even when I walk
through the darkest valley,
I will not be afraid,
for you are close beside me.
Your rod and your staff
protect and comfort me.
5 You prepare a feast for me
in the presence of my enemies.
You honor me by anointing my head with oil.
My cup overflows with blessings.
6 Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me
all the days of my life,
and I will live in the house of the Lord
forever.

This Road

A thousand times I’ve walked this road,
A thousand times or more,
And not much has ever seemed to change
At least not heretofore,

But today as I came strolling by
And passed an injured man,
I asked if I might bind his wounds?
Those in his feet and hands,

“No thanks!” he said with a knowing grin,
“I’m doing very well!”
But I might give you some good advice
That will pull you from your hell,

You see I’ve been right here and watched you,
“A thousand times or more”
But you’ve never even glanced up,
Never seen me here before,

You’re wrapped up in this worldly mess,
You follow after it everyday,
Perhaps you’d like to take a break
Then start walking down this way,

He pointed to a road unseen,
A path I’d never walked before,
It seemed a little narrow
But it begged me to explore,

It led beside a meadow green,
Then peaceful waters calm and clear,
And even through a deep, dark valley,
Yet I had not a single fear,

Soon I found that I was laughing
As sheer joy brought me to my knees,
I was unable to explain what happened
But somehow I knew that I was free,

Free from all the stress and pain,
All the panic and the pride,
I turned loose of all the lust and greed
And to this wicked world I died,

How glad I am to that injured man,
He must have been sent here from above,
I was surely lost here on this road
Until he showed me that path of love.

Father,

Thank You for sending Jesus. Through Him we have been freed from sin and death, and placed upon a path of righteousness.

“Shhhhh!, Listen”

That Voice

1 Kings 19:11-13
New Living Translation (NLT)

11 “Go out and stand before me on the mountain,” the Lord told him. And as Elijah stood there, the Lord passed by, and a mighty windstorm hit the mountain. It was such a terrible blast that the rocks were torn loose, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. 12 And after the earthquake there was a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire there was the sound of a gentle whisper. 13 When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave.

And a voice said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

That Voice

I hear it in the morning
Amid the chirping of the birds,
A message sweet and lovely
Spoken without a word,

And then again at midday
With the sun so high above,
As the world is calling loudly
I hear it whisper of your love,

Before long work is over,
The roar of traffic fills the air,
And it’s drowned out by the honking
Yet I know you’re always there,

At home I try to tune it in
But the kids want me to play,
And finally when I try again
On the couch I drift away,

Then as the full moon rises
And I climb the stairs to bed,
One last time I listen hard
As dreams begin to fill my head,

Please hear my plea as I fall asleep
May tomorrow I hear only you,
There is no voice that’s quite as sweet,
No other words quite so true.

Father,

Please do not let me listen to the world and fail to hear You. Thank You, Lord!
