Beyond Measure

How Blessed

Psalm 5:11-12
New Living Translation (NLT)

11 But let all who take refuge in you rejoice;
let them sing joyful praises forever.
Spread your protection over them,
that all who love your name may be filled with joy.
12 For you bless the godly, O Lord;
you surround them with your shield of love.

How Blessed

How blessed am I?
It’s as simple as can be,
I’m alive and kicking
And the air I breathe is free,

I’m up and down on both legs
And my back is feeling strong,
My health is not in question
And nothing seems to be wrong,

My friends and family
All seem to be doing well,
And my mind is holding on
As far as I can tell,

At night I have a place,
Where I can lay my head,
And breakfast is always waiting
When I rise up from my bed,

And anytime I want to
I can up and speak a prayer,
And I do not have to wonder
If He’s listening from up there,

You see, Jesus came to Earth
And made a way for you and me,
So yes, I’m sure and certain
That we’re as blessed as blessed can be.

Father,
Make known to all who will listen the desire You have to bless us. Shield all who come to You with Your favor. Thank You, Lord.

The Pen

The Pen

John 15:1-5
New Living Translation (NLT)

Jesus, the True Vine

15 “I am the true grapevine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch of mine that doesn’t produce fruit, and he prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce even more. 3 You have already been pruned and purified by the message I have given you. 4 Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me. 5 “Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.

The Pen

I am the pen and that is all,
I cannot write a thing; big or small,
But I rest within the mighty hand
Of him who writes the story grand,

Who paints the skies of silky blue
And sets the stars into nightly view,
Who created every single thing
And made the angel choirs to sing,

No, I cannot write a single word,
To claim otherwise would be absurd,
I am the pen so very small,
I cannot write a thing at all.

Father,

“Hold tight, my Lord, and use me well”
“Give me purpose, help me excel”
“I am lost outside of Your great hand”
“Please use me well within Your plan”

Thank You!

Walking on the Water

Just a Closer Walk

Circle up the wagons!
Get the hatches battened down!
There’s a storm that’s out there brewing
Where nothing but trouble can be found,

The government’s against us
Or so some would probably say,
And all the while the ordinary people
Are headed down the long, hard way,

Food prices keep on soaring
And gas just hit an all-time high,
If it weren’t for all our second jobs
We couldn’t possibly get by,

Crime is surely increasing,
Interest rates are on the rise,
But most folks live their busy lives
With rose-colored blinders on their eyes,

So why should I be worried?
Why should I cringe in mortal fear?
There’s a man out there walking on the water
And he’s coming over here,

Yes, he’s walking on the water
And offering a helping hand,
You only need to take hold
And on a solid rock you’ll quickly stand,

Hallelujah! he’s walking on the water,
Setting folks free from sin and death,
Praise god! he was walking on the water
Right up until his dying breath,

And now he’s sitting up in heaven
Where he’s praying for you and me,
And someday soon he’ll come for us
And set us completely free.

So why should I be worried?
There’s nothing that can harm me anymore,
There’s a man who walked upon the water
Who’s waiting on that celestial shore.

Father,

Thank You, from the depths of our souls!

A Code of Conduct

A Simple Plan

Matthew 22:37-40
New Living Translation (NLT)

37 Jesus replied, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.”

A Simple Plan

What I needed to face the world
Was a plan that would prevail,
Some sort of map or paradigm
That could not stall or fail,

It had to be both true and fair
To everyone’s separate ways,
And yet not deny what I believed
In all that it conveyed,

A simple way to meet all men
That should not cause disgust,
A way to spread the truth I know
That would not breed mistrust,

I was about to give up and quit,
This quest seeming to be in vain,
When I remembered these wise words
And all that they could attain,

“Love God with all your heart, soul and mind”
“And love others as if they were you”
There is no better plan to end the hate
And give the respect that all are due.

Father,

Please move within each of us so that we may become sons and daughters of the Living Lord, and act appropriately with one another.

Even Still

Even Still

James 4:13-16
New Living Translation (NLT)

Warning about Self-Confidence

13 Look here, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we are going to a certain town and will stay there a year. We will do business there and make a profit.” 14 How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog—it’s here a little while, then it’s gone. 15 What you ought to say is, “If the Lord wants us to, we will live and do this or that.” 16 Otherwise you are boasting about your own pretentious plans, and all such boasting is evil.

Even Still

Sometimes I think; that I must,
Whatever “must” might be,
Whether watching out for others
Or maybe just writing poetry,

My importance grows when I do,
What will happen if I don’t?
The world’s in need of what I’ve got
It’s what they surely want,

Then one day it always happens
For some reason I must relent,
And to my surprise I must admit
No one even wonders where I went,

The world keeps spinning as before,
The stars don’t come crashing to the ground,
Nothing skips a single beat,
When I’m nowhere to be found,

But what’s most amazing of it all,
It gives me such a thrill,
It’s no one less than the Lord above,
Who’s loves me even still.

Father,

Thank You for always be here. Even when I don’t see You or hear You or feel Your presence. I know You are here because You said so.

Love Is in the Air

On the Wind

John 10:27-28
New Living Translation (NLT)

27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them away from me

On the Wind

I heard it like a summer’s breeze
Gently whispering inside my mind,
Soft and sultry was its message,
Spoken in a language oh so kind,

My joy was then released unstoppable,
My heart was filled with perfect peace,
For I had heard a Word from Him
And I knew His love would never cease,

It’s little things that mean so much
Not packages filled with gold,
You’ll know that’s the honest truth
When you’re sick or getting old,

So listen when the Spirit speaks,
Lend an ear when you get the chance,
It’s not every day when we stop to hear
The heavenly invitation to romance.

Father,

Please help us to stop each day and listen to Your invitation to life and love.

The River of God

The Stream

Revelation 22:1-5
New Living Translation (NLT)

22 Then the angel showed me a river with the water of life, clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb. 2 It flowed down the center of the main street. On each side of the river grew a tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, with a fresh crop each month. The leaves were used for medicine to heal the nations. 3 No longer will there be a curse upon anything. For the throne of God and of the Lamb will be there, and his servants will worship him. 4 And they will see his face, and his name will be written on their foreheads. 5 And there will be no night there—no need for lamps or sun—for the Lord God will shine on them. And they will reign forever and ever.

The Stream

Cool water babbles and bubbles,
Delicately calling me near,
I sit by the bank and listen
As the soft sounds tickle my ears,

The breeze rustles through the fall leaves,
The colors dazzle my eyes,
Reds, browns and yellows
Contrasting the azure blue skies,

Toes caressed by the current,
Fond boyhood memories abound
Of holding the hand of my first love,
As the ripples give off their sweet sound,

If my visit was not such a bittersweet moment,
If I could linger and offer up thanks,
Then my soul would be healed of its sickness
As I walked along these beautiful banks,

There’s nothing that peace can’t recover,
There’s nothing his hand can’t restore,
If we just take time to bathe in the beauty
That resides on that heavenly shore.

Father,

Help us to return to our first love. To embrace You in all that we do. There’s healing that lives in Your presence where Your love comes shining through.

The Hand Behind

Lightning

Psalm 107:28-31
New Living Translation (NLT)

28 “Lord, help!” they cried in their trouble,
and he saved them from their distress.
29 He calmed the storm to a whisper
and stilled the waves.
30 What a blessing was that stillness
as he brought them safely into harbor!
31 Let them praise the Lord for his great love
and for the wonderful things he has done for them.

Lightning

Born from a heavenly anvil,
God’s mighty hammer strikes fire amid the dark skies,
Thunder then rumbles an answer
While the bright lightning dazzles the eyes,

Rain pours down from the cloud banks
Like silvery coins it glimmers and shines,
Refreshing the parched earth below them
A gift that’s both physical and divine,

Why do I stare with such wonder?
Why do I relish each flash?
Is it the thrill of the terrible light show?
Or the hand behind every crash?

Let not the heavens mesmerize me!
Let not me worship in vain!
The skies are filled with great glory,
But when they’re gone only he will remain.

Father,

We gladly thank You and give You praise for the power You display in the heavens and the love You reveal in all of our lives.

Grasses of the Field

Dandelions

Matthew 6:28-34
New Living Translation (NLT)

28 “And why worry about your clothing? Look at the lilies of the field and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing, 29 yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are. 30 And if God cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you. Why do you have so little faith?

31 “So don’t worry about these things, saying, ‘What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?’ 32 These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs. 33 Seek the Kingdom of God[a] above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.

34 “So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.

Dandelions

Quick to sprout from soil so poor,
Prolific little buds,
Paint the fields with color
Like some radiant, golden flood,

They thrill the eyes and nostrils,
Fragrant droplets of spring sunshine,
They get burned into our memories
And imprinted on our minds,

Such a simple, little flower,
They suddenly appear before our eyes,
And thrill us with their beauty
Before they quickly die,

Such is life, let’s face the fact,
We all will meet a sure demise,
So let’s ponder their creator
And the hands that laid the skies,

If so much beauty lies within
The blossoming of some weeds,
Would not the one who formed them
Be all we ever need?

Father,

You are the “Be All” / “End All”. With You there is life abundant, but without You…there is nothing. Help us all to be what You would have us be and blossom wherever You plant us.

Match Made In Heaven

Holding Hearts

Ephesians 5:25-33
New Living Translation (NLT)

25 For husbands, this means love your wives, just as Christ loved the church. He gave up his life for her 26 to make her holy and clean, washed by the cleansing of God’s word. 27 He did this to present her to himself as a glorious church without a spot or wrinkle or any other blemish. Instead, she will be holy and without fault. 28 In the same way, husbands ought to love their wives as they love their own bodies. For a man who loves his wife actually shows love for himself. 29 No one hates his own body but feeds and cares for it, just as Christ cares for the church. 30 And we are members of his body. 31 As the Scriptures say, “A man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.”32 This is a great mystery, but it is an illustration of the way Christ and the church are one. 33 So again I say, each man must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

Holding Hearts

When some lovers walk beneath the moon
They hold hearts; not merely hands,
And I think that heaven leans in close
So they can hear the angel bands,

And the moon seems to glow much brighter
While the planets dance across the skies,
Or maybe it’s just the stardust
That’s fallen into their eyes,

And their hearts will beat much faster
And maybe even skip a beat,
It happens every single time
That their eyes should chance to meet,

And if they pause their winsome walk
And partake of a lover’s kiss,
Their souls will be locked forever
In an eternal state of bliss,

You see, holding hearts is different
Than merely holding hands,
And only those who’ve done it
Can ever understand.

Father,
You set before the world Your perfect ways. May we embrace them and be made whole. Thank You!
