In Life, Love, and Friendship

Psalm 51:10
New Living Translation (NLT)

10 Create in me a clean heart, O God.
Renew a loyal spirit within me.

Live your life without regret
Open and above board
You will be steadfast, honest,
And brave through every trial
Letting neither yourself nor anyone else down

Help us to set your hearts and minds so that we will not falter, that we will not fail to remain true to ourselves and our friends. Let us be known as immovable.

Thank You, Lord!

Set Your Sights

Psalm 121:1-3
New Living Translation (NLT)

A song for pilgrims ascending to Jerusalem.

1 I look up to the mountains—
does my help come from there?
2 My help comes from the Lord,
who made heaven and earth!
3 He will not let you stumble;
the one who watches over you will not slumber.

Set on Fire

How can we ascend
If we do not first look up
And get set ablaze

You are our hope. You’re our strong tower and place of refuge. May we always look to You first and rise to meet our greatest opportunity…a child of God.

Thank You, Lord for such a possibility.

Keep Singing!

Romans 12:17-21
New Living Translation (NLT)

17 Never pay back evil with more evil. Do things in such a way that everyone can see you are honorable. 18 Do all that you can to live in peace with everyone.
19 Dear friends, never take revenge. Leave that to the righteous anger of God. For the Scriptures say,
“I will take revenge;
I will pay them back,”
says the Lord.
20 Instead,
“If your enemies are hungry, feed them.
If they are thirsty, give them something to drink.
In doing this, you will heap
burning coals of shame on their heads.”
21 Don’t let evil conquer you, but conquer evil by doing good.

Fight the Darkness

Have we laid down and died
Have we so lost our way
That while we are yet breathing
We have already passed away

Have we lost the will to do good
Are we traveling in the dark
Has the light of righteousness
Lost its eternal spark

And while we all complain and sit
And never lift a hand
Has the music stopped playing
Is it time to pay the band

Or is there one more verse to play
One last chance to overcome
Or perhaps a final chorus left
To sing and not succumb

Give us joy! Fill us with a gladness for Your will and Your way.
Shine Your light into the darkness and lead us home.

Thank You, Lord!

Why Can’t They See?

Job 15:31
New International Version (NIV)

31 Let him not deceive himself by trusting what is worthless,
for he will get nothing in return.

There are many who are cloaked in fraud
Who as wolves in sheep’s clothing reside
Always greeting us with a warm smile
Behind which their mischief can hide

But much worse than any of them
Is the deceiver whom we call a friend
Who greets us each day of our life
That charlatan who lives deep within

Oh! How devious is his disguise
As in the mirror he so cleverly hides
Passing judgment on everything
He needs only himself to decide

So surely we all should beware
Or our lives will be coming undone
For from all other evil we can flee
But ourselves we cannot outrun

We cloak ourselves in pride and pass judgment on things we do not know or understand. Please grant to us discernment that we might judge rightly. Lead us through the darkness of this world and keep us safe.

Thank You, Lord!

The Siren Song

Matthew 23:27
New Living Translation (NLT)

27 “What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs—beautiful on the outside but filled on the inside with dead people’s bones and all sorts of impurity.

Bring Me Along

Each day I’ve committed the greatest fraud
Carried away by its sensual call
Giving ear to the world’s praise and applause

How weak I’d become, how easy I’d fall
Ensnared by trappings they would emit
Desiring not to think myself so small

Like a drug addiction I’d like to quit
But praise just like poison rolled from their lips
Making me do things I’d like to forget

Somehow I must get from this sinking ship
Safe from the roar of sultry sirens’ songs
To where my thirsty soul can come to grips

So please hear my prayer Lord, bring me along
Away from this madness, away from harm
Forever in heaven where I belong

Please renew me! Change me inside and out. Bring me along with You by the power of Your Spirit and the Grace of Jesus.

Thank You!

One in a Hundred

Luke 15:1-7
New Living Translation (NLT)

Parable of the Lost Sheep

15 Tax collectors and other notorious sinners often came to listen to Jesus teach. 2 This made the Pharisees and teachers of religious law complain that he was associating with such sinful people—even eating with them! 3 So Jesus told them this story: 4 “If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them gets lost, what will he do? Won’t he leave the ninety-nine others in the wilderness and go to search for the one that is lost until he finds it? 5 And when he has found it, he will joyfully carry it home on his shoulders. 6 When he arrives, he will call together his friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep.’ 7 In the same way, there is more joy in heaven over one lost sinner who repents and returns to God than over ninety-nine others who are righteous and haven’t strayed away!

Except for Him

Oh my! I am quite a fellow
A cut above the rest
If you got to meet me
You would think me the very best

Strong and lean, standing tall
Full of humor and a smile
Excelling at everything
I am the favorite child

Of course, like most folks
You’ll find I have a fatal flaw
I hate to admit it
But I’m the biggest liar you ever saw

I’m not nearly as golden
As at first it might appear
Just listen to my parents
And the stories you will hear

And while I’m not so very short
I’m really not that tall
And turns out my life seems like a joke
It’s not too funny at all

Then there are those things
I have left undone
And those things
That I never should have begun

So I’m really not too special
In fact, I’m lost as I can be
Except for one incredible thing
You see, “Jesus died for me”

I know, that might sound a bit conceited
In light of all He’s done
But I’m sure He’d still have come for me
If I had been the only one

Today and every day I praise You and give thanks for You sending Jesus. What an amazing shepherd! Help me each day to be more like Him and less like this world so that I might become exceptional.

Thank You, Lord!

Heights Unknown

1 John 5:14-15
New Living Translation (NLT)

14 And we are confident that he hears us whenever we ask for anything that pleases him. 15 And since we know he hears us when we make our requests, we also know that he will give us what we ask for.

Might Think Me Tame

Cowboys ride on wild broncos
Race drivers speed around the track
Explorers go to far off places
Most days I just have a Big Mac

Singers perform to wild applause
Dancers spin and wow the crowd
Writers’ words gain much acclaim
I have to watch how many calories I’m allowed

Architects build mansions to the sky
Engineers construct roads galore
Artists paint pictures that impress
I have to work hard to get up off the floor

But there is a claim to fame I hold
It makes me feel so fine
Each day I get to talk to a king
Who says He is a friend of mine

Doesn’t take some special protocol
I don’t need to call ahead
I just start telling Him what’s on my mind
And He listens to every word I’ve said

And why He does it, I don’t know
But He answers my every request
Maybe not how I wished He would
But how it would turn out best

So keep your glamorous lifestyle
Enjoy your time in the bright spotlight
Just give me time to talk to the king
From morning’s break till the last thing at night

What a joy to talk with You. To come before Your throne and know that I am welcome. Please help me to live that I might find favor with You.

Without a Doubt

Matthew 21:21-22
New Living Translation (NLT)

21 Then Jesus told them, “I tell you the truth, if you have faith and don’t doubt, you can do things like this and much more. You can even say to this mountain, ‘May you be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and it will happen. 22 You can pray for anything, and if you have faith, you will receive it.”

If I do believe
Then it’s more than what I say
I must have no doubt

Please build our faith. Make it a wall of protection around us, a refuge of comfort within us, and a tower of strength that we may use to proclaim Your love. Thank You for healing us all.

Superficial 2

2 Timothy 3:1-5
New Living Translation (NLT)

The Dangers of the Last Days

3 You should know this, Timothy, that in the last days there will be very difficult times. 2 For people will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred. 3 They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good. 4 They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God. 5 They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. Stay away from people like that!

Just a Little off the Top

I sat down in the barber’s chair
Just the other day
And asked about the gray in my hair
And if he could take it away

Then he asked, why do that
It’s a sign of great respect
You’ve lived through, who knows what
And that’s what you should expect

Well, perhaps that’s true, I replied
I have learned a thing or two
But in this world where we reside
Older opinions are taboo

No one thinks we know a thing
We’re only in their way
And though there’s much that we can bring
At the table we cannot play

We worked real hard to grow our wealth
And kept our debt real low

Tried to live the way that kept our health
And in the Lord we’d grow

But they say, live in this moment
To experience all that you can
You won’t need a retirement
If you live from the government’s hand

What do you have after all you have done
And all those wars that you fought
You’ve only just begun
To pay for all that we’ve bought

So go ahead and wash away that gray
And give me a proper buzz cut too
I’m gonna start to live the superficial way
And maybe get what I am due

In this world there are many competing points of view, keep us all for being blind to the feelings and needs of others. May we learn to love and respect ourselves and our planet. May we seek after what is good and true for all mankind. May we always find that You are with us.

Thank You, Lord.

Return to Him

Elastic 2

Isaiah 64:8
New International Version (NIV)

8 Yet you, Lord, are our Father.
We are the clay, you are the potter;
we are all the work of your hand.

Bent for the Better

Sounds like being elastic
Might be a very good thing
We’re all pulled like a cable
Or compressed like a spring

The kids are always screaming
The grandparents want us to spend more time
The creditors are constantly calling
Right up the wall I want to climb

The car broke down on the highway
The plumbing’s beginning to leak
Our insurance just got cancelled
I wanted to run away and shriek

So to be able to snap right back
That’s something we sure can use
Cause life can stretch us to the point
We’d like to run off and be a recluse

But Lord, when it comes to my sinful ways
Please don’t let me go back like I’ve been
But mold me like a piece of art
And forge me until I bend

It’s painful to get made anew
It goes against my will
But do not fail to shape me
And make me better still

Lay Your masterful hands upon us and forge from us new lives. Lives worthy of Your touch, worthy of Your caress, worthy of Your love. Help us to be clay that is bendable but that holds its shape.

Thank You, Lord for all things.
