A Whisper of Hope

Speak to me

1 Kings 19:11-12
New Living Translation (NLT)

11 “Go out and stand before me on the mountain,” the LORD told him. And as Elijah stood there, the LORD passed by, and a mighty windstorm hit the mountain. It was such a terrible blast that the rocks were torn loose, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. 12 And after the earthquake there was a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire there was the sound of a gentle whisper.

Speak To Me

Speak to me with words I know
In speech that I can understand,
Explain the workings of this world
And the nature of your plan,

Speak to me and heal my spirit
With love songs in the night,
Of what is good and what is evil
Keep me from losing sight,

Speak to me, I need attention
I need it oh so much,
When all the others have departed
I need to feel your touch,

Speak to me in heart-broken moments
When life’s hard knocks are to blame,
Hold my hand and whisper softly
Let me hear you call my name,

Speak to me when darkness surrounds me,
When death beats loud upon its drum,
Your mighty voice will break the cadence
And with a word shall bid me to “Come!”

You guide us through this dark world and into the Light with a whisper from Your mighty voice. Thank You so!

Not My Circus!

The Whip

Proverbs 18:21
New Living Translation (NLT)

21 The tongue can bring death or life;
those who love to talk will reap the consequences.

Mark 11:25
New Living Translation (NLT)

25 But when you are praying, first forgive anyone you are holding a grudge against, so that your Father in heaven will forgive your sins, too

Here I Stand

Here I stand and will remain no more,
The hands of darkness lose their grip,
The Light has come to set me free
From chains and lethal whip,

Though foot to chest can cause great pain,
Though fist to face can cause knock you out,
The tongue is vicious beyond compare
And can leave you with endless doubt,

The searing pain of words that blame,
The never-ending fight,
It seems that they would take my soul
And leave me in this plight,

An abuser’s mind is so hard too reason,
What makes them tick inside?
How can they be so good one moment?
Then make us want to hide,

But not mine to reason anymore,
To this circus I lay no claim,
All the monkeys I have forgiven,
All the tigers I have tamed,

So I thank You, Lord, for this rest,
This peace within my heart,
I cannot make all things right
But with Your help I’ve made a start.

Give us strength to forgive, for You have forgiven us of so much.

All in How You Look at It

Another Mans Trash

Psalm 118:28-29
New Living Translation (NLT)

28 You are my God, and I will praise you!
You are my God, and I will exalt you!
29 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good!
His faithful love endures forever.

One Man’s Trash

Each day he wakes at 6 am
And rises to meet the sun,
All day he’ll ride the bumper
Until his work is done,

Whether hot or freezing cold,
It really matters not,
This is the call that life has made
And he answers with all he’s got,

He’ll never be an executive
Or have a career that’s really cool,
But each child gives him a kiss
Before they board the bus to school,

And as he gathers up the trash
And cleans up the city’s mess,
He says a simple, happy prayer
His gratitude to express,

Dear Lord I thank you for this job
And the strength to do it every day,
It might not seem like a lot to some
But with it my bills I can always pay,

And my children have food and clothes,
My wife is dressed just fine,
My truck don’t look like very much
But it gets me to church on time,

And me? Well, I’m doing great!
And I certainly concede,
I’m out here in the new day’s sun
And You bless me with all I need,

So Father, please hear my prayer,
Let it float up to Heaven’s throne,
I thank You for my simple life
With my family and home.

Help us to be grateful for this life and all that You have blessed us with. May joy fill our hearts and gratitude spill from our lips.

On a Hill

Luke 11:33
New Living Translation (NLT)

Receiving the Light

33 “No one lights a lamp and then hides it or puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where its light can be seen by all who enter the house.

Lighthouse shining amid the dark
Guiding us on through the night,
Keeping us safe from surf and rocks
If we will but follow its light,

This ship is ours to sail as we see fit,
Made captain with complete authority,
The choices we make will bring us home
Or leave us lost on a stormy sea,

So when you’re adrift with no way to see,
And the waves keep battering your boat,
Just look up and see that beacon,
It’s there to help keep you afloat,

Yes, that lighthouse still shines as always,
Planted high on a hill, long ago,
And if we will choose to follow its light,
It still steers us away from the shallows.

Thank You for sending us the Light of the world so that we night choose to follow His light.

Monty Pythonisms

2 Timothy 3:1-5
New Living Translation (NLT)

The Dangers of the Last Days

3 You should know this, Timothy, that in the last days there will be very difficult times. 2 For people will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred. 3 They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good. 4 They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God. 5 They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. Stay away from people like that!

Monty Pythonisms

Monty Python searched for “The Holy Grail”
And I believe he had it right,
Sometimes you must just “Run Away!”
Because there are those who love to fight,

A Black Knight stands before us
And refuses to let us pass,
There is no rhyme or reason
Just a never-ending impasse,

And there are what seem like tiny rabbits
That will tear you up in shreds,
They’ll catch you when you’re not looking
And get deep inside your head,

So be sure your quest is worth it,
Be sure the gain is worth the loss,
If you’re always tilting at windmills
Then anger will be your boss.

Be with us through the difficult times. Help us to do what is right. It is always right to follow after You.

In His Embrace

In the Dark

Psalm 121:5-8
New Living Translation (NLT)

5 The Lord himself watches over you!
The Lord stands beside you as your protective shade.
6 The sun will not harm you by day,
nor the moon at night.
7 The Lord keeps you from all harm
and watches over your life.
8 The Lord keeps watch over you as you come and go,
both now and forever.

In the Dark

The lights go out and I’m alone
Or at least I hope it’s true,
Then suddenly I hear a sound
And I don’t know what to do,

Petrified, I barely move,
My heartbeat races fast,
My parents’ room is down the hall
But the distance seems so vast,

My little brother, Timmy
Still sleeps beside their bed,
I wish that he was in this room
And I was him instead,

My father’s arms are big and strong
He could probably kill a bear,
In my mother’s arms it’s soft and warm
And how I wish that I was there,

A rustle then is heard somewhere
And I hide amid the sheets,
It might be some big monster
And I wonder what it eats,

With a flash the lights come on
And my mother’s caress I feel,
“We forgot to have you say your prayers”
“Would you say them as I kneel?”

“Five little angels ‘round my bed”
“One at the foot”
“One at the head”
“One to watch”
“One to pray”
“And one to take my fears away” *

“Now go to sleep, my little man”
“The morning will be here soon”
And with a kiss the lights went out,
And I feel asleep watching the moon.

* “Five Little Angelsis a bedtime prayer that I have heard of for a long time, but have never been able to find out who authored it. Please know that this portion of my post was not written by me. If anyone knows who wrote this I will be glad to give them proper credit.

Your mighty arms protect. Your gentle touch soothes and comforts. May we all find ourselves perpetually in Your embrace.

Out of the East

James 4:13-15
New Living Translation (NLT)

Warning about Self-Confidence

13 Look here, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we are going to a certain town and will stay there a year. We will do business there and make a profit.” 14 How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog—it’s here a little while, then it’s gone. 15 What you ought to say is, “If the Lord wants us to, we will live and do this or that.”

The Fate of the Avalon

An east wind suddenly started to blow
So we turned the Avalon into its force,
Trimmed her sails, then gauged the stars,
And set out on a northerly course,

We were two days behind our schedule
Having been delayed by an untimely fog,
And the crew played too hard in Westchester
So I noted the fair wind in the ship’s log,

“We are but two days shy of Hampton,
The wind is good or so the crew reports,
We are gaining back our lost time,
In two and a half days we’ll surely make port”

With that I gave the order let me sleep
And closed tight, the door to my cabin,
Perhaps I would be able to relax now,
What else could possibly happen?

Two bells sounded as I drifted away,
As the Avalon sped through the night,
Thank God it won’t be much longer now
With the Port of Hampton nearly in sight,

Six bells were sounding as I awoke with a start,
The voice of the first mate speaking plain,
“You’d better come topside, sir!”
The wind has changed and it’s begun to rain,

I sprang to my feet and I pulled on my coat
And up the ladder I climbed with all my might,
The rain was pelting my face like sand
And lightning soon lit up the night,

“Heave to, lads! Heave to!”
I shouted at the top of my voice,
The jib was set and the mainsail trimmed
As we all knew it was our only choice,

The fierce winds grew and the waves battered the ship
But the anchor line held us tight,
We probably would have made it through
But another ship came up out of the night,

She was out of control with her sails torn to shreds,
The anchor line long ago snapped,
The crew above deck held on for dear life,
Those below were certainly trapped,

Just before she rammed us I looked for her name,
Then as we hit I could see it from below,
Fate was her name emblazoned in red
And death was her cargo in tow,

We still sail the Avalon even today
But not a one of us made it, I’m sad to report,
The sea swallowed us up in that terrible storm
And sent us off for a different port,

I learned one thing though, I’ll have to admit
It’s the best advice I’ll ever impart,
“It’s never too wise to say what you’ll do
Because fate can tear things apart”.

May our words be no more than “yes or no”, for we know not what life holds for us. May we just be happy knowing that we are Yours.

We Choose to Love

When We Danced

Genesis 29:20
New Living Translation (NLT)

20 So Jacob worked seven years to pay for Rachel. But his love for her was so strong that it seemed to him but a few days.

When We Danced

When we danced the moon was full
And our hearts burned again,
Love is not only for the young
But those who will not let it end,

Some will choose to sit alone,
To only ponder and reminisce,
But love still waits for those who dare
And will not just merely exist,

They choose to live a life of love,
Those who still embrace sweet romance,
But the days are short and the nights are long
For those who will not take a chance,

So when you see the moon is full
And romance fills the air,
Be sure to do your best to dance
Before there’s no one there.

Be with us all and help us to love one another so we will never sit alone with our regrets and wait to die. In all things might we remember that: “love conquers all”.

I Can’t Figure It Out!

Mathematical Sabbatical

Romans 16:17-18
New International Version (NIV)

17 I urge you, brothers and sisters, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them. 18 For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naive people.

Mathematical Sabbatical

It’s simple mathematics,
Plain as one plus one is two,
Put some folks together
And they’ll know just what to do,

That is of course unless
There is a derivation,
Or just what is meant
At this exact moment and location,

And then there is always,
The problem of subtraction,
It takes away from everything,
It’s such a darn distraction,

Just when things seem to settle down
And reason we’re applying,
The cost is nearly settled
But we begin that multiplying,

There’s always hope, I suppose
If we make the right decision,
But Lord above, please keep us from
Choosing to use that long division,

And if we do, forgive me please
But I’ll refuse to be fanatical,
I’ll just have to pack up all my bags
And take a mathematical sabbatical.

Touch our minds and our hearts with Your words. Teach us the way and keep us on that path. Thank You for guiding us through this darkness.

To the Moon, Alice! To the Moon!

The Final Trip

They stepped upon the moon
In nineteen sixty-nine,
Everything was looking good,
Everything was doing fine,

One small step for man,
One giant leap for mankind,
Then Neil and Buzz went off to see
Just what they might could find,

They bounced around on the Rover,
Picked up some rocks and dust,
Then jumped back in that Lunar-Lander
And took off for Earth or bust,

Near fifty years have come and gone
And don’t it seem quite strange,
We’re still fighting wars and such
And not much has seemed to change,

Wouldn’t it be nice one day,
No matter which party makes you swoon,
That we could put them all on board
Shoot them to the moon.
