Never too Late to be Archaic

Archaic

2 Corinthians 4:16-17
New Living Translation (NLT)

16 That is why we never give up. Though our bodies are dying, our spirits are being renewed every day. 17 For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever!

Archaic

Finally, a word I can relate to
In fact; it suits me to a tee
I’m not really all that ancient
But again I’m not twenty-three

The way I look won’t win a prize
My hippie hair is such a mess
And people often stop and stare
At the old fashioned way I dress

I’m quite a sight as you can tell
To deny it wouldn’t be the truth
Some might call me archaic
While others “long in the tooth”

But no matter what you call me
I’m still having lots of fun
I’m retired on a pension
And all my working days are done

So how archaic can I be
When I’m living life so free
While you’re still driving in to work
I bet you wish that you were me

Father,

In the waning years may we be strengthened. May we be filled with Your Spirit. May we light the world around us with Your glory. Thank You, Lord!

Guilty but Not Charged

Guilty

Romans 8:1-2
New Living Translation (NLT)

Life in the Spirit

8 So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. 2 And because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death.

Guilty

Sweat slowly trickles down my cheek
As I feel my heart wildly pound,
My accuser points an angry finger
And displays the evidence that’s been found,

“What have you to say for yourself?”
“What is your plea today?”
“Are you not guilty as you’re charged?”
“Come now, what have you to say?”

I squirm a moment in my seat
And then I twist and turn,
What could I possibly say to him?
That would let this trial adjourn,

My mind keeps whirling oh so fast
I’m literally shaking in my boots,
I wonder if I’ll be set free
Or if I’ll get the noose,

Then my only defense comes to me
And I fall before the judge and shout,
“Have mercy on me; if you will”
“For I’m guilty without a doubt!”

The judge sits silent and ponders long
And weighs the justice that my crime demands,
Then finally declares me innocent
By the nail scars in his hands.

Father,

Thank You for sending Jesus to redeem us for we were guilty as charged and without hope, and yet He has pulled us from the grip of sin and death. Thank You, Lord Jesus!

Assume Nothing

Assumption

James 4:13-15
New Living Translation (NLT)

Warning about Self-Confidence

13 Look here, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we are going to a certain town and will stay there a year. We will do business there and make a profit.” 14 How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog—it’s here a little while, then it’s gone. 15 What you ought to say is, “If the Lord wants us to, we will live and do this or that.”

Assumption

Take my word for it
It is going to happen
Agh! The deal fell through!

Father,

Let our words be “yes” or “no”. Let us assume nothing; for our lives are tentative at best. We place our trust in You and call out for Your help. We know You will answer because You love us. Thank You!

The End?

Disappear

Revelation 6:13-17
New Living Translation (NLT)

13 Then the stars of the sky fell to the earth like green figs falling from a tree shaken by a strong wind. 14 The sky was rolled up like a scroll, and all of the mountains and islands were moved from their places.
15 Then everyone—the kings of the earth, the rulers, the generals, the wealthy, the powerful, and every slave and free person—all hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains.
16 And they cried to the mountains and the rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of the one who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb.
17 For the great day of their wrath has come, and who is able to survive?”

Disappear

What if we look up
And it all disappears,
And a mighty trumpet blast
Is all we can hear,

And the heavens roll back
Like a scroll in our hands,
While the stars fall away
Like pearls from a broken strand,

And should we look up
And see a king on a charger,
Will we then surrender?
Or rebel even harder,

We have a promise
From the time of the garden,
That God would bring peace
And one day grant pardon,

So the court is in session
And the gavel is raised,
Soon there will be justice
At the end of all days.

Father,

There is a day coming that is like no other day. Justice will be done, mercy given, and peace will once again reign. Thank You, Lord for every good and perfect gift. May all hear, may all come to know of Your love.

Be Careful What You Say

Awkward

2 Samuel 12:5-7
New Living Translation (NLT)

5 David was furious. “As surely as the Lord lives,” he vowed, “any man who would do such a thing deserves to die!
6 He must repay four lambs to the poor man for the one he stole and for having no pity.”
7 Then Nathan said to David, “You are that man! …

Awkward

Others have talents
Beauty and brains,
I’m kind of awkward
And that’s pretty plain,

Whether I’m eating
With manners so gross,
Or wearing an outfit
That’s boorish and gauche,

And that doesn’t mention
Just how clumsy I can be,
I can fall on my face,
I can surely guarantee,

But no matter how clumsy
How gross or unfit,
I have a secret
That makes me legit,

God up above
Sees me as unique,
And He runs and He holds me
Before I can speak,

“Don’t say a word!”
“Hush my sweet child”
That’s all He will say
With a hug and a smile.

Father,

How awkward it is to speak before You in our defense, for our lives are indefensible.
Therefore let us trust only in Your goodness, only in Your mercy. Thank You, Lord!

Just Let It Go

Complication

Ephesians 4:25-27
New Living Translation (NLT)

25 So stop telling lies. Let us tell our neighbors the truth, for we are all parts of the same body. 26 And “don’t sin by letting anger control you.” Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27 for anger gives a foothold to the devil.

A Maddening Complication

Everything had been such a snap,
Thought I might just take a nap,

Never thought it could go so easy,
It was quite “easy peasy lemon squeezy”,

But from nowhere came a complication,
That brought with it much aggravation,

A diversion small yet so annoying,
Soon all my peace and joy it was destroying,

How is it that such a little thing
Can so much chaos and trouble bring?

But once it got inside my head,
It stayed there no matter what I said,

So keep in mind before you’re triggered,
Anger brings more misery than you ever figured,

It complicates where ground is given,
And holds on tight when unforgiven.

Father,

We come before You asking Your help. Please keep us from anger. Do not let it grip our minds and drive us on and on in a relentless cycle of complication. Everything becomes complicated with pride. Help us to forgive, for in forgiveness is Your peace. Thank You, Lord!

Sooner or Later

Israel 588

Isaiah 66:7-8
New Living Translation (NLT)

7 “Before the birth pains even begin,
Jerusalem gives birth to a son.
8 Who has ever seen anything as strange as this?
Who ever heard of such a thing?
Has a nation ever been born in a single day?
Has a country ever come forth in a mere moment?
But by the time Jerusalem’s birth pains begin,
her children will be born.

Premature

He sprang up
Before his time,
A tender reed,
The gentle vine,

A man of sorrow
Silent in death,
The price to pay
For second breath,

His people called
From Earth’s four winds,
Homeland brought forth
By one day’s end,

A child delivered
Premature to his reign,
He’ll come again in glory
A kingdom to gain,

And peace will triumph
While joy breaks out,
When he comes with the trumpet
And the angel’s shout!

Father,

Long ago You told it all through the prophets and now we see it happening before our eyes.

Psalm 122:6
New Living Translation (NLT)

6 Pray for peace in Jerusalem.
May all who love this city prosper.

What’s Infecting Us?

Infect

1 John 3:1
New Living Translation (NLT)

3 See how very much our Father loves us, for he calls us his children, and that is what we are! But the people who belong to this world don’t recognize that we are God’s children because they don’t know him.

Infected With Love

A little bit of something
Just got inside of me,
And now it’s trying hard
To be what it can be,

I’ve started feeling queasy
And my temp is on the rise,
My nose has started running
And there are spots before my eyes,

I’d like to take some medicine
But I’m not sure what is best?
It might be something viral
Or just a bug down in my chest?

I guess I should call the doctor
And request to make a visit?
But by the time they’ll let me come
My symptoms will have quit,

So I’ll just grin and bear it
It’s not that hard to do,
It’s a whole lot easier than the tests
That they would put me through,

Besides there is a special medicine
My mother taught me long ago,
She’d say a prayer and kiss my head
Then pull the covers up just so,

Then I would drift off peacefully
To dreams that made me smile,
Knowing I was loved by her
And that I was God’s own child,

She went to Heaven years ago
But that medicine still endures,
It’s not so much the prayer or kiss
But the love that was the cure.

Are You Wishing Well?

Thin

James 1:14-15
New Living Translation (NLT)

14 Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice us and drag us away. 15 These desires give birth to sinful actions. And when sin is allowed to grow, it gives birth to death.

Wishful Thin-king

In this world it used to be
That wishes grew on trees,
Everything from being rich
To swinging on a flying trapeze,

We’d sit and dream of all the fame
Of being so well known,
That everyone would know our name
And place us on a starry throne,

How could we have ever guessed?
The change from what it’s been,
Cause nowadays our only wish
Is that we could be quite thin,

Not thin within our pockets,
Not thin within our minds,
But thin up here in our bellies
And down there in our behinds,

But until somehow that wish comes true
And I’m lying on some beach,
Please make sure I’m covered up
And all the cameras are out of reach.

Father,

Help us to perceive what is important, what is of value. May we then pursue it with all our hearts. Thank You, Lord, for caring so.
