Heed the Warnings ?

Philippians 4:6-7
New Living Translation (NLT)

6 Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. 7 Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.

There she blows!
Storm’s a’coming!
Look out below!
Cigarette smoking can be dangerous to your health!
Buckle up!
Look both ways before crossing!
Don’t drink and drive!
Don’t text and drive!
Don’t talk on the phone and drive!
Don’t forget to brush your teeth!
Don’t feed the bears!
Don’t speed!
Don’t drive too slow!

Without all these warnings
And even many more,
Would our destruction
Come for sure?

Would the world stop spinning?
Would the universe come unglued?
What if we all stopped worrying
And enjoyed our lives anew?

Perhaps we wouldn’t need
A cigarette or a drink,
If we laid down our troubles
And took some time to think,

We could ponder all the beauty
In the world to be found,
We might even have a meal
With our families all around,

We could even hug our spouses
Maybe gently hold their hand,
And relish our time together
When we thought each other so grand,

If we could just stop for a moment
Before our days begin,
And be thankful for our blessings
That seem to never end,

Most of all the warnings
Are things we could avoid,
If we merely weren’t in such a rush
And so totally annoyed

Bowl of Betrayal

Matthew 26:20-23
New International Version (NIV)

20 When evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the Twelve. 21 And while they were eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me.” 22 They were very sad and began to say to him one after the other, “Surely you don’t mean me, Lord?” 23 Jesus replied, “The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me.

Lost Trust

We place our precious trust
In those we’ve let into our hearts
We hope it lasts and lasts
This relation it imparts

A sacred, solemn vow
Whether silent or proclaimed
That binds two souls together
In a union unashamed

A covenant, if you will
A walking through the fire
An image of an unseen bond
That only few acquire

How great then is the poison string
How crushing to the soul
When that precious trust’s betrayed
There is only one thing that consoles

Have mercy upon us when we betray Your trust. When we disobey Your commands. When we would make much of ourselves.

By His Hand

Colossians 1:16
New Living Translation (NLT)

16 for through him God created everything
in the heavenly realms and on earth.
He made the things we can see
and the things we can’t see—
such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world.
Everything was created through him and for him.

Quartet of Life

Earth is our home
A blue marble in space
Filled with God’s bounty
A most marvelous place

Wind is a warrior
Able to caress or to pierce
Invisible to the eye
Yet both gentle and fierce

Fire is a force
It can warm and protect
But don’t doubt its danger
And treat it with respect

Water is so vital
It’s hard to explain
It makes up the oceans
And the nourishing rain

This Quartet of creation
Has been given to man
A garden from God
Made by His hand

By Your mighty hand were all things made and without You there would be no life. Therefore may we always be within Your Presence. Thank You, Lord!

Feel Small But Walk Tall

Jeremiah 29:11
New International Version (NIV)

11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Feeling Micro?

Have you ever felt
So very, very small
That it made you believe
You weren’t noticed at all

That the whole world passes
But not an eye gives you a glance
And no matter how much you try
No one will ever give you a chance

Or maybe it’s the opposite
And you’re under critical review
And you feel like ever single eye
Is looking just at you

Your every thought and action
Seems to be the topic of the day
They’re watching everything you do
And every word you say

Well, if this is the situation
That you find yourself in today
There’s only one thing to remember
There’s only one thing I can say

Look around at God’s vast universe
Ponder all His hands have made
Then remember that He sent His son
To pay a debt we could not have paid

He hung upon a tree of grief
Unjustly ridiculed and tortured there
The righteous sacrificed for you and me
The Father’s great love for us to share

So do not let the taunts and jabs
Make you feel you have no friends
The triune Lord who made it all
Is with you ‘til the end

Thank You so for loving us, for blessing us with life, and giving us a hope for the future. We, Your people, are not destined to die, but to live forever. We praise You and thank You for all that You are. Amen!

Hardly Working

Colossians 3:23-24
New Living Translation (NLT)

23 Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. 24 Remember that the Lord will give you an inheritance as your reward, and that the Master you are serving is Christ.

End Inefficiency

You can work and work and work
But never get it done,
From the breaking of the dawn
Until the setting of the sun,

You can stretch and strain your muscles
Until you have a heart attack,
Or you can devise yourself a simple plan
And not break your silly back,

It doesn’t pay to be inefficient
No matter what you have to do,
So I’ve decided just to stay in bed
Until all the work is through,

I know that might be frowned upon
By the work-driven of society,
But before you start to criticize
I’ll explain my knack for efficiency

You see I took over L’il Abner’s job
Down at the mattress factory
And now I’m testing mattresses all day long
Taking naps and cutting zzzz’s

Bitter Pills To Swallow

Proverbs 22:24
New Living Translation (NLT)

Don’t befriend angry people
or associate with hot-tempered people,

I will not swallow this,
I really must decline,
I will not be ridiculed
Even one more time,

For as long as I can remember,
Maybe longer than that,
You’ve argued and fought
And I have just sat,

You’re clever and foxy
And you manipulate well,
But not for another minute
Will I sit in this hell,

You’ll get angry and furious,
Then the victim you’ll become,
Yet to your tricks and treachery
I will not succumb,

I won’t even hate you,
I’ll forgive and forget,
I’ll just walk away quickly
Without a regret,

Perhaps down the road
When memories grow dim,
We can mend all our fences
With help from Him

Be with us as we struggle with our self-esteem and pride. We can’t seem to get along with everyone, even if we try. So please come for us and change us from the inside out. Help us to be strong in the ways we need to be strong and merciful in what we need to show mercy in. Thank You, Lord!

A Face in the Crowd

Romans 8:28
New Living Translation (NLT)

28 And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.

I stagger amid the buzzing crowd,
Fellow travelers,
Aboard this vast maze called life,
Out to do battle,
To tame the beast,
To conquer,
But I am merely wandering,

I struggle in the noise to hear
Those around me,
To take counsel,
To gather myself together,
To come up with a plan,
All the while panicking,
Because I am slowly lingering,

I am without a dream among dreamers
Who dance with enthusiasm,
Tall, blonde beauties,
Youthful and strong,
Primed and ready,
Yet I am surely drifting,

Perhaps one day
If God will grant it,
Will allow me to hear,
Will allow me to see,
Will allow me to love,
I will live and not just watch,

Let our minds be filled with Your purpose for us. May our hearts yearn to do only that. May our spirits find peace in doing so. Thank You for loving us so,

What I Let You See

Jeremiah 29:11-13
New Living Translation (NLT)

11 For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. 12 In those days when you pray, I will listen. 13 If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me.

The Me, You Can’t See

Try as you might
You can’t see me,
It’s hidden away
Just what I “be”,

Like a super hero
With this power inside,
That always allows me
To run away and hide,

So don’t even bother
Even if I cry and complain,
To discover the truth
For invisible I remain,

For while I might be lonely
And desire a true friend,
My fear of rejection
Wins out in the end,

Dear God, up in heaven
If You hear what I pray,
Remove from me this madness
And see me today.

Fear does not come from You, so please move within all of us today and help us to know ourselves and to be someone who others can trust and share their true selves. Fill us with Your love that we might share it with the world. Thank You!

Where Are We Bound?

Matthew 24:24-27
New Living Translation (NLT)

24 For false messiahs and false prophets will rise up and perform great signs and wonders so as to deceive, if possible, even God’s chosen ones. 25 See, I have warned you about this ahead of time.
26 “So if someone tells you, ‘Look, the Messiah is out in the desert,’ don’t bother to go and look. Or, ‘Look, he is hiding here,’ don’t believe it! 27 For as the lightning flashes in the east and shines to the west, so it will be when the Son of Man comes.

Identical Destinations?

So many different identities,
So very many souls,
All traveling different paths,
All with so many goals,

Where are we all going,
With destinations grand?
Can we all be heading,
For identical promised lands?

Does it really matter,
Which road that we all choose?
Is it just about how hard we work,
As to whether we win or lose?

Is there a place out there at all,
Or is it just a dream we share?
When we end this earthly walk,
Will anything be there?

Are we merely cosmic dust,
That happened here by chance?
Is this just some interim,
In time’s great expanse?

I have pinned my hopes on God,
The one and only true Creator,
Who sent His son to prove His love,
And be our Lord and Savior,

There is no work that I can do,
He paid for my admission,
He and I will soon be as one,
On the day of great transition,

I pray one day you share my faith,
To me it is the only choice,
Then we’ll all sit at God’s table,
And sing praises in one voice.

We Cannot Blush

2 Timothy 3:2-5
New Living Translation (NLT)

2 For people will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred. 3 They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good. 4 They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God. 5 They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. Stay away from people like that!

Blush Me Not

We cannot blush
Just look around
We know not shame
It can’t be found

We live for lust
In every form
Do what you will
Is the new norm

We have lost
Our moral compass
We all speak
As sounding brass

We dance as those
Who in Sinai’s desert
Forge false gods
And the Law subvert

Praise God!
His mercy’s endless
To forgive us
For all we transgress

If we could only
Change our deadly passion
He would forgive
And our souls refashion

But more and more
God’s given the bum’s rush
We don’t have time
We cannot blush
