Permit Me, Please

Psalm 19:8
New Living Translation (NLT)

8 The commandments of the Lord are right,
bringing joy to the heart.
The commands of the Lord are clear,
giving insight for living.

Permits, Permissions, and Power

It seems we need a permit
To do most everything
From getting a driver’s license
To building a backyard swing

If you choose to protest and to march
Or raise some money for the poor
To be sure you don’t wind up in the jail
An official ok you must procure

And if your home needed an extra room
You had to get approval from the man
And you had to bring it up to code
Before the work began

And don’t you think it won’t cost you bucks
To have some inspector give approval
You’ll have to pay for all the paperwork
From foundation to trash removal

And your home owners association
Won’t even let you spit
If you break a single of its many rules
With a fine you will be hit

We really must have lost our way
Or at least that’s how it seems to be
If the Pilgrims had needed all this paperwork
Would there be a “Land of the Free”
