Enough Light

Dim

Matthew 8:23-27
New Living Translation (NLT)

Jesus Calms the Storm

23 Then Jesus got into the boat and started across the lake with his disciples. 24 Suddenly, a fierce storm struck the lake, with waves breaking into the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. 25 The disciples went and woke him up, shouting, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” 26 Jesus responded, “Why are you afraid? You have so little faith!” Then he got up and rebuked the wind and waves, and suddenly there was a great calm. 27 The disciples were amazed. “Who is this man?” they asked. “Even the winds and waves obey him!”

A Light on a Hill

The wind blew strong that night
As we made our way up the Eastern coast,
All the while the clouds were rolling in
And soon the rain had us engrossed,

I took the wheel from the first mate
And sent him up to the crow’s nest,
To watch for land and give us warning
Should the rigging seem too stressed,

By now the wind had picked up strong
As lightening arched across the dark sky,
It was all that I could do to hold the wheel
And guide the ship against the waves so high,

We were tossed and turned amid the gale
And the mainsail was soon torn asunder,
So we pulled her in against the wind
And the booming of the terrible thunder,

The storm went on for hours it seemed
As we fought to keep our small ship afloat,
I can tell you many a prayer I spoke to God
And much cussing I dare not quote,

Then there appeared a light so dim
Shining from a far off distant shore,
“Land Ho!” came the first mate’s cry
While “Thank God” rang out even more,

“Come around,” I cried and spun the wheel
And I felt the ship slowly respond,
And we all could see it off of the bow
That tiny light lying in the dark just beyond,

We came creeping into the harbor
Our ship and crew in a battered state,
We could see the lighthouse on the hill above
And gave thanks for not meeting a watery fate,

The sea has claimed many a ship and sailor
Who wait in Davy Jones’ locker so deep and blue,
But I know we made it safely home that night
Because of a dim light that carried us through

Father,

We go off sailing on our own so often, not knowing the wind or the waves or the weather. Help us to be willing to give the “wheel” to You and to climb up in the crow’s nest and watch for the Light.

Listen With Your Heart

Premonition

John 16:13
New Living Translation (NLT)

13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future.

Guided

They come from out of nowhere
These thoughts that take control,
And slowly make me aware
Of something being told,

What could it mean?
How could I know?
Those things unseen
From deep below,

They come like dreams
Not quite defined,
Yet they are the seams
That open up my mind,

Through their tiny eyes
I see the future clear,
The meaning I surmise
From the visions that appear,

Can it be for real?
Can I really comprehend?
Do they actually reveal?
What will happen in the end?

The truth revealed it is a fact
That requires a firm decision,

And I must surely act

On this holy premonition

Father,

Open our eyes to the truth of the Comforter. Help us hear His voice and know it with certainty. We thank You for revealing Yourself to us.

Let’s Have It A la carte !

Proverbs 14:12
New Living Translation (NLT)

12 There is a path before each person that seems right,
but it ends in death.

Imagining a New Way

Oh! How we imagine!
In everything we do,
Dreaming up our own views,
No matter what is true,

It’s all about a feeling,
It’s all about desire,
Why should we adhere
To what someone else requires?

Why can’t you get with it
And gain a new attitude?
The world it’s a changing,
And we don’t want platitudes,

We crave to do what we want
Without chastisement or delay
So we all kick and scream
“We never will obey!”

So let’s all be BKaptists
And “Have it our own way”,
It doesn’t seem to matter
What we do or what we say

(*BKaptists –  those who practice the religion of “have it your way”)

Father,

Have mercy upon us for our prideful ways, for seeing things through lustful eyes. Grant to us Your wisdom and Your humility that we might yield to You in all things.

Get Together

Congregate

Exodus 18:22-23
New Living Translation (NLT)

22 They should always be available to solve the people’s common disputes, but have them bring the major cases to you. Let the leaders decide the smaller matters themselves. They will help you carry the load, making the task easier for you. 23 If you follow this advice, and if God commands you to do so, then you will be able to endure the pressures, and all these people will go home in peace.”

Congregation Participation

What could be wrong?
What could be bad?
If we got together,
Wouldn’t it make us all glad?

Just like a party,
Or a big ol’ bash,
It would make everyone happy,
And create such a splash,

Well, except for the cooks
Who prepare all the food
And maybe the musicians
Whose playing sets up the mood

Then there’s the crew
Who has to clean up the place,
I’m not really certain
But that might not be a smile on their face,

Of course, there were those
Who had to plan the whole thing,
I think the tables and chairs
Was what they had to bring

So maybe it wasn’t such a hot idea
For us to congregate,
It always seems like a whole lot of fun
If in the work you don’t have to participate

Father,

May we all share the load so that no one has too much work to do. Bless us with Your presence and keep us at peace with all.

Up Above My Head

Astral

Isaiah 26:3
New Living Translation (NLT)

3 You will keep in perfect peace
all who trust in you,
all whose thoughts are fixed on you!

Astral Projection for Two

I was sitting alone on my sofa
When a weird thought shot through my head,
What if I try some astral projection?
Maybe from here over to my bed?

So I relaxed myself from my head to my toes
And prayed for protection in flight,
Then I got up and walked across the room
And looked back to see if I was still alright,

There I was stretched out like a big fish
With a goofy yet satisfied smile,
When all of a sudden I stood up
And went wandering off for a while,

Hey! Buddy, What do you think you are doing?
Came my query to my physical self,
I’m off to get a beer and a sandwich
Could I bring you something for yourself,

No, I replied, with a vengeance
You must stay where I left you before,
When I get back from this cosmic journey
I’ll need you, our union to restore,

There’s really no need to worry
I’ll be back as quick as a flash,
I just need a little bit of nourishment
To keep our blood sugar from taking a crash,

And maybe just a moment by the tv,
You know the big game is on right now,
But I’ll be right here when you need me
If the stars up above will allow,

Now you’ve gone and done it
You’ve broken my hypnotic mood,
I’ll have to return to our body
And you’ll have to stop hunting for food,

Then as fast as a flash of lighting
My spirit and body were one,
And my journey abruptly ended
It seemed like before it had begun,

When it comes to astral travel
There’s a lesson that I have learned,
Your mind can do marvelous, heavenly things
But your body will not be concerned

Father,

You bless us and keep us, if we will but let You. Shape our hearts to follow only after You. Seeking and following You are the only forms of travel that will take us anywhere worthwhile.

Betrayed by Our Actions

Conversant

1 Samuel 16:7
New Living Translation (NLT)

7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Don’t judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The Lord doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

Speaking Without Tongues

We speak in many languages
Our messages to impart,
Some don’t even need the use of words
To show what’s hiding in our heart,

Just the way we stand or sit
Or even fold our arms,
Tells the world just what we think
Like the ringing of an alarm,

And if we’re angry we can’t hide
That glare coming from our eyes,
No more than we can conceal our love
When that special someone passes by,

So you might as well open up
And see what being conversant brings,
Your unspoken words tell all anyway
And reveal your hidden things

Father,

You know our every thought, our ever motive. Be with us and change our hearts and minds so that we speak only in love. Thank You, Lord for every kindness.

Challenged By Grace

Assay

John 5:24
New Living Translation (NLT)

24 “I tell you the truth, those who listen to my message and believe in God who sent me have eternal life. They will never be condemned for their sins, but they have already passed from death into life.

Assay Me Not

I pled with the king,
I pled through the night,
Please give me a way,
To be pleasing in your sight,

Turn up the heat!
Let it sizzle and roar!
Test my true metal,
Right down to the core,

Send me on a mission,
Give me a goal,
A chance to prove,
The worth of my soul,

Grant me a title,
Dub me a knight,
There must be something,
To make it all right,

Then a Voice I heard whisper,
As clear as could be,
“Judgment is the last thing you’ll want
When You stand before Me”

I do not assay,
The value of man,
By the things that he’s done,
Or the strength of his hand,

There’s nothing to do,
That’s not already been done,
You only need accept,
The grace of my Son,

Then I will see you,
As I always see Him,
Full of righteousness and love,
Right up to the brim

Father,

Thank You for mercy and grace. Through them you see me anew. Hallelujah!

Encrusted by Words

Encrust

John 15:15
New Living Translation (NLT)

15 I no longer call you slaves, because a master doesn’t confide in his slaves. Now you are my friends, since I have told you everything the Father told me.

Encrusted in Doubt

Like a ship with barnacles
We are all weighed down
By the baggage we carry
And the guilt to which we’re bound

Too long we have listened
To the voices of spite
Who have told us we are nothing
And did it with delight

Until at last our own thoughts
Are filled with such self-doubt
That we come to believe
It’s what life is about

And there in the emptiness
Of our deep-wounded soul
We remain fully encrusted
In all that we’ve been told

But there is a sweet voice
That whispers nothing but love
A shepherd who came quickly
From high up above

He can free you from your prison
He can break all your chains
He’ll remake you like new
Until only Light will remain

So if you are covered
In sickness and grief
Just call out from the darkness
And He will give you relief.

Constantly Calling

Constant

Psalm 141:3-4
New Living Translation (NLT)

3 Take control of what I say, O Lord,
and guard my lips.
4 Don’t let me drift toward evil
or take part in acts of wickedness.
Don’t let me share in the delicacies
of those who do wrong.

The Dripping

Ever beating
At its slow incessant pace
Ever interrupting
Though I try to give it no place

My mind tries its hardest
To shut out its persistent voice
Yet no matter how hard I resist
It seems to have no choice

Its message is relentless
Its method most inhumane
If I have to listen
It will drive me quite insane

And whether from a faucet
Or a nearby television set
The ever constant ridicule
Still fills me with regret

And it’s not just there but everywhere
A thousand voices filled with spite
From the radio to social media
They continue day and night

Perhaps one day I’ll just pull the plug
And go completely off the grid
Out there among the birds and bees
God’s voice cannot be hid

It’s All In The Details

Compromise

Hebrews 10:23
New Living Translation (NLT)

23 Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep his promise.

Too Far Compromised

It sounds like such a good thing
Just and fair for all
We each give up a little bit
And tear down the offending wall

You move a little to the left
And I’ll drift a little right
Then things will come together
And we will not have to fight

But there are things just too important
To allow their slow decay
Is there not a point somewhere
Where we must say, “No way!”

And never waiver from its truth
And at that point to take a stand
And even offer up our life
If that is its demand

There is a process, that is true
Where we as people must agree
But some things must be carved in blood and stone
If we are to be truly free

Father,

Keep us tightly in Your mighty hands and hold us firm in Your truth. You are the way from which we must never compromise, never stray.
