Party Hearty, Lest You’re Tardy

Matthew 25:1-13
New Living Translation (NLT)

Parable of the Ten Bridesmaids

25 “Then the Kingdom of Heaven will be like ten bridesmaids who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. 2 Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. 3 The five who were foolish didn’t take enough olive oil for their lamps, 4 but the other five were wise enough to take along extra oil. 5 When the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and fell asleep. 6 “At midnight they were roused by the shout, ‘Look, the bridegroom is coming! Come out and meet him!’ 7 “All the bridesmaids got up and prepared their lamps. 8 Then the five foolish ones asked the others, ‘Please give us some of your oil because our lamps are going out.’ 9 “But the others replied, ‘We don’t have enough for all of us. Go to a shop and buy some for yourselves.’ 10 “But while they were gone to buy oil, the bridegroom came. Then those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was locked. 11 Later, when the other five bridesmaids returned, they stood outside, calling, ‘Lord! Lord! Open the door for us!’ 12 “But he called back, ‘Believe me, I don’t know you!’ 13 “So you, too, must keep watch! For you do not know the day or hour of my return.

Will You Have a Ride ?

I was running late that day
As the door slammed on the train
And I stood there as the 6:35
Sped away in the pouring rain

I could not be late to work that day
It simply would not do
We had a meeting with our top client
About the contract to renew

And so I grabbed a taxi on the corner
And to the driver I explained
“I’ve got a meeting at eight o’clock!”
“And here’s a hundred if we make it”, I proclaimed

Well, he glanced at me and hit the gas
And we shot off like a rocket ship
And we were making real good time
Until we hit that great big dip

His car began to bounce around
And then he up and lost control
If it wasn’t for that pile of dirt we hit
We probably would have rolled

We both were fine or so it seemed
But his cab was beyond repair
So I paid him what I owed him
And ran to catch the bus up on the square

And as luck would have it on that day
As I was getting to the stop
The bus was waiting there before me
But its transmission had just gone “plop!”

Well, I was really feeling bad
“I mean, what else could go wrong!”
So I stuck my thumb out to hitchhike
When a policeman came along

“Hey Buddy! What are you doing?”
Was the question I ignored
“Go away, let me alone!”
As I belted out a roar

Then he tapped me on the shoulder
And spoke so firm and strong
“If you don’t want to go to jail?”
“You had better move along”

As I spun around I realized
Just who I was speaking to
And I apologized very quickly
As I told him all I had been through

He said, “My name Jerry, where are you headed?”
And I told him straight away
“Then get in the squad car right now”
Was all he had to say

Next thing I heard was the siren’s blast
As his lights began to flash
Soon we pulled up to my building
And I offered him some cash

“No sir”, he said, “It’s my pleasure”
“I just hope you won’t be tardy”
I glanced down at my wristwatch
And it was only seven-forty

“No sir, you got me here
With time enough to spare”
“Isn’t there something I could do for you
You know, I am a millionaire”

“I’m glad for you, if that’s all you need
But you see there’s a king that rides with me
He’s saved my life a million times or more
He’s all I’ll ever need”

“He told me you needed help today
As you hitchhiked in the rain
For He knew your millions wouldn’t get you here
From the moment you missed your train”

Then he drove away as I stood there
And then I went in and closed the deal
I’ve made millions more since that day
But I don’t feel like I used to feel

You see, there is no one who rides with me
And I know money can’t buy everything
I’m afraid I might be tardy to the biggest deal
And Jerry might not bring around the king

There is only one ride to Your kingdom and His name is Jesus. Please help us to not be tardy.

Thank You so!
