Isaiah 61:1
New Living Translation (NLT)

Good News for the Oppressed

61 The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is upon me,
for the Lord has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor.
He has sent me to comfort the brokenhearted
and to proclaim that captives will be released
and prisoners will be freed.

Through the Bars

Life is quite easy
Down here at the zoo
Just sit in our cages
As the people pass through

Our food is all furnished
Our shelter is free
The doctor looks in
And there is not a fee

There’s only one problem
Or maybe there’s two
We often get bored
Cause there is nothing to do

And when we get to thinking
About the freedoms we’ve lost
We quickly discover
Our bars can’t be crossed

So take some advice
As you pass by our pen
Hold on to your freedom
Or you might not see it again

Your mercy is great and Your arm is mighty. You have purposed to save the lost and nothing will deter You. Thank You for Your immeasurable love.

It’s Just a Snip!

Matthew 5:17-19
New Living Translation (NLT)

Teaching about the Law

17 “Don’t misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to accomplish their purpose. 18 I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not even the smallest detail of God’s law will disappear until its purpose is achieved. 19 So if you ignore the least commandment and teach others to do the same, you will be called the least in the Kingdom of Heaven. But anyone who obeys God’s laws and teaches them will be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven.

Snippets of Truth

The Truth
Can be cut away
Dissected and stripped
Of its power and sway
Held hostage
By those who would say
Times have changed
“Let’s do it this way!”
The former is wrong
In what they portray
So we have decided
To stray
Even if this causes
A great disarray
And might in an instant
Our foundation betray
Let Truth then rule
Without delay
And though this
Might seem cliché
It alone has the power
To save the day

You do not change. Your word and Your way is always the same. It is always the truth.

Thank You for speaking life.

One Way, Many Choices

One Way

John 14:6
New Living Translation (NLT)

6 Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.
No one can come to the Father except through me.”

One Way

We make our choices
They then make us who we are
It is our one way

We travel the road of our life making choices. Each choice leads us to a little different destination.
Help us Lord to make choices that lead us to You and to Life.

Thank You!

When One Is Not One

John 17:20-21
New Living Translation (NLT)

20 “I am praying not only for these disciples but also for all who will ever believe in me through their message. 21 I pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are one—as you are in me, Father, and I am in you. And may they be in us so that the world will believe you sent me.

The Church

Bone and sinew
Spirit and soul
Bonded together
No part greater than the whole

Each member is separate
Each member the group
Multitude of talents
A single pursuit

Called of the Spirit
Redeemed by the Son
Each with their purpose
The Kingdom made One

As special as children
Yet servants at heart
Each knows their value
Each does their part

An Earthly beginning
A heavenly end
Cast out as rebels
Called in as friends

A mixture so different
All knitted up tight
Losing their own lives
But gaining the Light

Bless us with oneness of heart, mind, and spirit. May we pursue You and find You in all that we do.

Thank You, Lord

Life’s Beat

Psalm 150:4-6
New Living Translation (NLT)

4 Praise him with the tambourine and dancing;
praise him with strings and flutes!
5 Praise him with a clash of cymbals;
praise him with loud clanging cymbals.
6 Let everything that breathes sing praises to the Lord!
Praise the Lord!

An Endless Beat

Beating and beating
And never retreating
Our hearts are pounding away

Ticking and tocking
Though it might seem shocking
On a relentless march throughout life

Pumping and pumping
With an endless thumping
Delivering all that we need

Loving and loving
We’re filled with “turtle-doving”
Our emotions it stirs up somehow

Breaking and breaking
So troubled and aching
It suffers at love that is lost

Stopping and stopping
Not even with shocking
The end of our percussive race

Thanking and thanking
On heaven we’re banking
God’s heart is greater than ours

Freeing and freeing
Our spirits become our being
And our march continues on high

You set our lives in motion with the beating of our hearts and we run our race until it stops. May we always run with You and for You…all the days of our lives.

Cartoons and Congress

Proverbs 29:2
New Living Translation (NLT)

2 When the godly are in authority, the people rejoice.
But when the wicked are in power, they groan.

Who are the Underdogs

Super hero Underdog
And arch villain Overcat
Argued over Veticare
And had quite a royal spat

Underdog was for things a new way
Overcat for as they were
So they debated and debated
Until the air was full of fur

Then suddenly there was a POW
Followed by a big ole BAM
Then we heard a “YOU TAKE THAT”
With a final screeching WHAM

Oh my gosh, it was so awful
There was such a great big scene
They finally each grabbed a shotgun
And blew the other to smithereens

But as luck would have it
When the dust had settled down
They were perfectly alright
Without a scratch that could be found

So you see we must remember
Superheroes’ lives are just a cartoon
And like the members of our Congress
From all they do they are immune

Bless us with wisdom so that we might make sound choices in all things. Grant us leaders who are righteous and trustworthy. May we always follow after You first and foremost.

Thank You, Lord for loving us in spite of ourselves.

Clutching at Straws

Romans 8:37-39
New International Version (NIV)

37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Clutching the Truth

A creator who is love
Believe and receive

We clutch onto our lives as one who is drowning in a vast, wild river. Struggling at every twist and turn, grasping at anything that we might take hold of, and all the while fearing both death and the life we hold so dear. Let us realize how great is Your love for us that we might let go of this world and this life, and begin to float free in Your river of love. Therein lies all that we need and all that we seek.

Thank You, Lord for all things.

Look Up!

Psalm 121
New Living Translation (NLT)

1 I look up to the mountains—
does my help come from there?
2 My help comes from the Lord,
who made heaven and earth!
3 He will not let you stumble;
the one who watches over you will not slumber.
4 Indeed, he who watches over Israel
never slumbers or sleeps.
5 The Lord himself watches over you!
The Lord stands beside you as your protective shade.
6 The sun will not harm you by day,
nor the moon at night.
7 The Lord keeps you from all harm
and watches over your life.
8 The Lord keeps watch over you as you come and go,
both now and forever

Grim Thoughts

We all have our little gremlins
Who like to follow us around
And when we begin to grin or smile
They try to make us frown

Like when we look into the mirror
At the new haircut we got
They whisper sure it looks real good
But what about that bald spot

Or maybe we just gave a speech
On the virtues of being old
Then inside our heads their laughs begin
And get to be uncontrolled

And worse by far than their ridicule
Is their seductive tempting ways
When we might have a glass of wine
But we wind up in a drunken daze

And have you ever been driving home
In the fury of the busy street
When you find yourself suddenly in a rage
At every other driver that you meet

Ahhhh! They’re dirty little demon dogs
That lead us all astray
But there’s one cure for their sickness
That might help us save the day

When you hear their whispers start
As they try to cloud your mind
Turn your eyes to heaven
Where there are higher thoughts to find

Be with us all and keep our minds from evil. Let us not become discouraged. Let us not be angry. You are with us and all is well.

Thank You, Lord

Garden of Mercy

Genesis 3:14-15
New Living Translation (NLT)

14 Then the Lord God said to the serpent,
“Because you have done this, you are cursed
more than all animals, domestic and wild.
You will crawl on your belly,
groveling in the dust as long as you live.
And I will cause hostility between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and her offspring.
He will strike your head,
and you will strike his heel.”

The Very First Thanksgiving

I sit here and look within myself
And dread to hear your voice
What will you say and think of me
When you realize my choice

Will you cast me off completely
Will you chide me in the strictest way
Is there some dreadful darkened pit
Where I’ll be bound to stay

And then my fear comes to life
As you beckon me by name
I quiver as you pronounce my fate
Oh! Why did I pass the blame

My choice has cursed the family
From beginning to the end
But you have left a single hope
In the one that you will send

And no, I was not cast completely off
Or bound for all eternity
The keys to death and hell were won
Your mercy set me free

There is always much to thank You for, from the smallest to the grandest blessings. There is one; however, that is the greatest of all…Your mercy, who hung on a tree.

Thank You, Lord for Your great kindness.
