A Few Days Away

Dear fellow bloggers,

I’ll be away for a few days (might get to drop in, hope so). I hope you all have encounters with God everywhere you go and in everything you do.

May you always find yourself…in His embrace.

See you soon

All Fluff and No Stuff

1 Corinthians 13:1-3
New King James Version (NKJV)

The Greatest Gift

13 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. 2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing.

Fluffed Up

Fluff has no import
It’s just wasted time and space
“Fluffous” Ad Finem

Keep me from being “fluffed up” and full of myself and my accomplishments, and letting the world know about them. If I must boast, let me boast of being Yours and of loving others. Therein lays true purpose and fulfillment.

Thank You, Lord

Thankful for the Light

Psalm 107:13-15
New International Version (NIV)

13 Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
and he saved them from their distress.
14 He brought them out of darkness, the utter darkness,
and broke away their chains.
15 Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love
and his wonderful deeds for mankind,

Scared Grateful

Wouldn’t it be dandy
Wouldn’t it be fine
If we would be grateful
By sharing our time

Not to be so wrapped up
In our own little plan
That we paid attention
And gave a helping hand

Even changing a light bulb
Can be quite a chore
If the light fixture that’s broken
Is twelve feet off the floor

Or maybe, just maybe
There’s a lad or a lass
That has a real problem
With their algebra class

And sure you could give money
To that homeless man
But he might be happier
If you just shook his hand

It’s a sad state of affairs
That we all find ourselves in
When we’re lonely and broken
But too scared to be friends

We’d rather sit safely
Within our own cloistered room
Than to reach out in love
And put an end to our gloom

Give me courage today to break free from my fear. To reach out in the dark and offer what small light I possess and to grab hold of what light I can find. May I never grow weary of doing good or of sharing Your Light.

Thank You for every blessing, every good gift.

Prefer Peace

Romans 12:14-18
New Living Translation (NLT)

14 Bless those who persecute you. Don’t curse them; pray that God will bless them. 15 Be happy with those who are happy, and weep with those who weep. 16 Live in harmony with each other. Don’t be too proud to enjoy the company of ordinary people. And don’t think you know it all! 17 Never pay back evil with more evil. Do things in such a way that everyone can see you are honorable. 18 Do all that you can to live in peace with everyone.

I Prefer

I prefer to live in peace
No strife, no panic, and no grief
To sit inside a happy home
Where love’s rule brings such relief

To not give into my selfish heart
And always seek control
To bless another with a helping hand
And watch their dreams unfold

To have compassion for another’s plight
And speak with healing flair
To voice concern in such a way
I’d even use it for a prayer

And at last to lift this choice on high
To reach the Throne of God
Where He might hear my heart’s desire
Up where the angels trod

Then He might listen and give a smile
And with His mighty hand
Give me wave on my final day
To enter the Promised Land

Help me each day to surrender to Your love and leave behind this dark world for the hope that is to come.

Thank You

Orange With Envy

Revelation 2:17
New Living Translation (NLT)

17 “Anyone with ears to hear must listen to the Spirit and understand what he is saying to the churches. To everyone who is victorious I will give some of the manna that has been hidden away in heaven. And I will give to each one a white stone, and on the stone will be engraved a new name that no one understands except the one who receives it.

The Uniqueness of Orange

Even if the Earth would stop spinning
Or you broke down and cried
You can’t rhyme with orange
No matter how hard you try

It’s creepy and spooky
It’s downright absurd
But there’s no word that rhymes
No, not one single word

So don’t even attempt it
You’ll be wasting your time
Orange is a poem breaker
Cause there is not a rhyme

It’s a beautiful color
It’s a wonderful fruit
But when it comes to rhyming
It’s not worth a “hoot”

It’s best to just sit back
And enjoy its renown
No other word sounds like it
It just cannot be found

We are reminded that You view each of us as unique and valuable. You have reclaimed us through the works of Jesus and bless us with a special relationship that is beyond any treasure. May we walk with You through this physical life and hold on to the hope that awaits us…when we recive our new name.

Thank You, Lord

So Real or So It Seemed

Matthew 15:15-20
New Living Translation (NLT)

15 Then Peter said to Jesus, “Explain to us the parable that says people aren’t defiled by what they eat.”
16 “Don’t you understand yet?” Jesus asked.
17 “Anything you eat passes through the stomach and then goes into the sewer.
18 But the words you speak come from the heart—that’s what defiles you.
19 For from the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, all sexual immorality, theft, lying, and slander.
20 These are what defile you. Eating with unwashed hands will never defile you.”

So Real or So It Seemed

I found myself in a dream last night
I was somewhere down around Mobile
It started out alright at first
And then it all became surreal

All the rivers were flowing uphill
And the trees grew upside down
The sky was pink as grapefruit
While the dirt was green, not brown

The birds all quoted Shakespeare
And the fish didn’t need to go to school
They learned all they needed to know
When they were tutored by the mule

And stranger still than all of that
Was when I turned around
And I was in my birthday suit
My clothes nowhere to be found

Right then a bus load of my friends
Pulled up and caused a cold, cold draft
That seemed to be the cruelest thing
Until they pointed at me and laughed

Well, I grabbed a branch from a nearby plant
And tried my best to cover up my vital parts
Until I realized that I was a victim of
Poison ivy and the itch that it imparts

As if that wasn’t bad enough
I broke out in multi-colored hives
And though I was quite beautiful
I wasn’t sure I would survive

And just as quickly as it had started
My dream suddenly came to an end
My wife had hogged all the covers
And I was freezing once again

Then I remembered our dinner talk
As we discussed the kids homework
And ate that enormous pizza pie
As my stomach now went berserk

Take some advice that is tried and true
It will save you lots of pain
“Be careful what you swallow now
Or you might have to swallow it again”

This world can seem so surreal if we don’t have You. You are our hope and our clarifier. In You and from You comes truth and that truth will set us free.

We thank You so!

Who We Are

Isaiah 64:8
New Living Translation (NLT)

8 And yet, O Lord, you are our Father.
We are the clay, and you are the potter.
We all are formed by your hand.

There is a part of everyone
That makes us who we are
Running like a river
Into a reservoir

It’s what fills our hearts and minds up
And gives us our identity
Without it controlling who we are
There’d be no you or me

The “I” in me can be hard to see
Like a babe in bath water tossed
Sometimes we’re driven to please the world
While our true selves are often lost

Almighty God has created us
And given us gifts from up above
They make us who we truly are
If we use them in His love

So do your best to live for Him
And You will have no regret
He is that “I” in all of us
We never must forget

You have made us and gifted us with talents that make us, not only who we are, but You make us whole. Without You we are wandering in a lonesome wilderness without identity or comfort. Please enter everyone’s hearts and minds and help them blossom into the creations You intended.

Thank You, Lord for every kindness.

The Tattletale

Matthew 7:15-17
New Living Translation (NLT)

The Tree and Its Fruit

15 “Beware of false prophets who come disguised as harmless sheep but are really vicious wolves. 16 You can identify them by their fruit, that is, by the way they act. Can you pick grapes from thorn bushes, or figs from thistles? 17 A good tree produces good fruit, and a bad tree produces bad fruit.

The Little Mark

We have a little mark
That everyone can see
It tells the world who we are
And what’s important to you and me

It doesn’t show itself a lot
It doesn’t scream or shout
Just so very subtly
It reveals what we’re all about

It’s a telltale sign we can’t remove
It permeates through and through
It has very little to do with what we say
And everything with what we do

The public’s eye is upon us all
And no matter what we expound
If they’ll watch us as we live our lives
Our true nature will be found

We have a little mark
That everyone can see
It’s a trademark of a sort
That tells who’s master over you and me

Be with us today and every day so that we may be known as Your children. Let our yes be yes and our no be no. May we always mete out truth in love.

Thank You, Lord!

The Pause That Refreshes

John 8:1-11
New Living Translation (NLT)

A Woman Caught in Adultery

8 Jesus returned to the Mount of Olives, 2 but early the next morning he was back again at the Temple. A crowd soon gathered, and he sat down and taught them. 3 As he was speaking, the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in the act of adultery. They put her in front of the crowd.

4 “Teacher,” they said to Jesus, “this woman was caught in the act of adultery. 5 The law of Moses says to stone her. What do you say?”

6 They were trying to trap him into saying something they could use against him, but Jesus stooped down and wrote in the dust with his finger. 7 They kept demanding an answer, so he stood up again and said, “All right, but let the one who has never sinned throw the first stone!” 8 Then he stooped down again and wrote in the dust.

9 When the accusers heard this, they slipped away one by one, beginning with the oldest, until only Jesus was left in the middle of the crowd with the woman. 10 Then Jesus stood up again and said to the woman, “Where are your accusers? Didn’t even one of them condemn you?”

11 “No, Lord,” she said.

And Jesus said, “Neither do I. Go and sin no more.”

Cacophonous Caterwauling

What in the world is this cacophony of sound
So many voices speaking makes me dumbfound

This one is sure that the world’s not flat
But another disagrees completely with that

Some think each day the Earth grows hot
While others are screaming, “It is not!”

The Republicats think we must spend money this way
Then the Demicans holler, “It’ll be a cold day!”

The hawks all want us to go fight in a war
But the doves all say, “It’s peace we can’t ignore”

Even in sports we can’t seem to find a plan
On whether we ought to kneel or to stand

I propose we all take a needed timeout
And see if we can’t find some other route

Perhaps if we stopped for a moment to listen
We might understand the other position

We might even come to change our own mind
When we hear the facts we so abruptly declined

And maybe, just maybe in that moment of time
With what seems like no reason or rhyme

God might be able to speak to our hard hearts
With wisdom and love only He can impart

We might even come to realize how silly we’ve been
Arguing over stuff that most surely will end

And then we might be able to rest in the night
Knowing that He protects us with all of His might

It is good to listen and hear another’s opinion, and to treat them with respect and grace. It is better still when we will listen to You. Help us to pause each day and wait upon You to speak to us. Your wisdom is the greatest treasure that is available to us here on Earth.

Thank You so!

Dancing with the Angels

Acts 28:27
New King James Version(NKJV)

27 For the hearts of this people have grown dull.
Their ears are hard of hearing,
And their eyes they have closed,
Lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears,
Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn,
So that I should heal them.

Out of the Fog

Our ears can hear every sound
But what if there is none around

Our eyes can picture every sight
As long as there’s a flicker of light

But we also have spiritual eyes and ears
That only work when God is near

They only hear the truth from above
And see what is conceived in love

And though often angels hang around
We cannot see them or hear a sound

Please, Dear Lord, if I may be so bold
Enlighten me and heal my soul

That I may not miss a single chance
To watch the angels sing and dance

To hear the heavenly choir’s anthem
Of how You paid the bride’s ransom

And gaze upon the Heavenly sights
That will fill my heart with sheer delight

Oh please, I plead, and plead some more
Open up my senses that my heart might soar

We live in darkness. We have become as cave dwellers, stumbling in the dark yet descending deeper and deeper into its deadly arms. Pursuing pleasure at the cost of joy. There is no treasure buried here. Only the glitter and dazzle of fool’s gold. Please open our eyes and ears to Your way and Your will. Only in them can we be complete.

Thank You, Lord for all things, great and small, through which we are blessed. Amen!
