2 Kings 23:1-3
New International Version (NIV)

Josiah Renews the Covenant

23 Then the king called together all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem. 2 He went up to the temple of the Lord with the people of Judah, the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the priests and the prophets—all the people from the least to the greatest. He read in their hearing all the words of the Book of the Covenant, which had been found in the temple of the Lord. 3 The king stood by the pillar and renewed the covenant in the presence of the Lord—to follow the Lord and keep his commands, statutes and decrees with all his heart and all his soul, thus confirming the words of the covenant written in this book. Then all the people pledged themselves to the covenant.

When King Josiah received The Book of the Covenant that had been found during the restoration of the Temple, he had all the people to assemble before him and he paid homage to the Lord by reading His word before the people. Then the people pledged themselves to follow the Lord and all the idolatrous worship was abandoned in Judah. Josiah had all the idols destroyed and the temples torn down and the Ark of the Covenant was returned to the Temple. The Lord repented of His anger against His people for a while, but they had paid homage only with their lips and not their hearts.

Father,

Today and every day help us to be doers of Your word and not only hearers. You give to your true followers all that they could desire or even imagine, but we often throw it away chasing after our pride. Forgive us and draw us near to You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

  1. “…they had paid homage only with their lips and not their hearts.”

Great observation and nice exposition. Reminds me of what Jesus said when He quoted Isaiah in Matthew 15:8 “This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.”

It fits so well, I may have to borrow the gist of your mini-sermon as part of my Religion Vs. Relationship series!

    Thanks for a job well-done!
