New International Version (NIV)
Jesus Calms the Storm
23 Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. 24 Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. 25 The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!”
The disciples were just like us at that time. They were worried. They had been worried all day long. That morning Jesus had told two of them to go ahead of them into Capernaum and to secure a boat down by the shore. As Jesus entered the town He was swamped by people as if He were a rock star. “Heal me. Heal my friend! Don’t leave until I get back, I’m going to get someone who needs healing!” This went on with them screaming and pushing until He reached the shoreline where He jumped into the boat He had sent the two to secure. They pushed out from the shore and from there He taught and healed all day long. He healed them all. Everyone who asked. At the end of a very long day, He then asked the disciples to push off and carry Him to the other side of the lake.
On the way there, He fell asleep. Then a mighty storm blew up and the boat was rocked and the disciples were very afraid. That’s when they woke Him and He calmed the storm with three little words, “Peace! Be still!”
Jesus was at peace that night. He knew that He was safe in the arms of His Father. It was not His time. And when it would be His time, He would still be at peace because He was One with God. He knew the Father had a plan for His life and He knew that nothing would interfere with that plan.
How did He know the Father would protect Him? One way was that He knew He was on the way to free a man from a legion of demons on the other side. Nothing was going to stop that. Nothing. Besides, He knew the nature of God. He knew His faithfulness. He knew His love.
What a blessing to be one with You. To be so in tune with You that we know everything that You plan for us. We would know Your very nature of love. We could rest in the assurance that You would guard us in every situation. Thank You for Your kindness and every blessing. Watch over us all and help us to sleep, even in a boat, in a storm, without fear or trembling.
In the name of Him who sleeps through storms. Amen!
