New International Version (NIV)
The Destruction of the Temple and Signs of the End Times
24 Jesus left the temple and was walking away when his disciples came up to him to call his attention to its buildings. 2 “Do you see all these things?” he asked. “Truly I tell you, not one stone here will be left on another; everyone will be thrown down.”
3 As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. “Tell us,” they said, “when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?”
Jesus’ disciples were curious, worried, maybe even perplexed. When would the end of the age come? Would it be soon or in the distant future?
Jesus goes on to tell a troubling tale of things to come, wars, persecution, false prophets deceiving much of the world, and a time of great turmoil that even the elect would not survive, if not for the mercy of the Lord.
It’s been over two thousand years since Jesus made those statements. Many of the things He said have come true or appear to be coming. So, is today the distant future that Jesus spoke of? We won’t know until the one sure sign He spoke of happens, and even He doesn’t know the exact time – only the Father.
We live in troubling times. Wars, diseases, persecution, and terror are seen the world over. We do not ask to know the time of the end, but we request Your strength and comfort until that glorious day occurs. Until that day be with those who are troubled, those who are sick, those who are hungry, and those who need shelter. Cradle us all in Your loving arms and guide us safely home.
In the name of Him who holds the keys to life and death. Amen.
